Operation Holiday: Supporting Families in Need This Season

Families like that of Mateo and Rosalia are facing significant challenges as they strive to provide for their four children during difficult economic times. Mateo works 12-hour shifts to support the household, while Rosalia manages their infant and toddler and ensures their two older children, both diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, attend necessary appointments. The couple has opted for a one-income household to better manage their family’s needs.

“We rely heavily on food pantries to keep us fed,” Rosalia stated. “Making sure they have full tummies is more important than keeping the lights on or paying the rent.” The family’s reliance on local food assistance highlights a growing trend among many families in similar situations.

Helping Harvest, a charitable organization, plays a crucial role in alleviating hunger in the region. Last year, it distributed over $20 million in food to nearly 110,000 people in Berks and Schuylkill counties. Rosalia emphasized the importance of this support, saying, “There are times when we would have nothing to eat if it weren’t for Helping Harvest. Everything is so expensive right now that we can’t make ends meet.”

Operation Holiday: A Lifeline for Families

Established in 1991 by The Mercury in Pottstown, Operation Holiday aims to assist families facing financial hardships during the festive season. The program, which is now in its 35th year, ensures that families have food on their tables and gifts under the tree come Christmas morning. Over the years, it has expanded its reach to serve communities in Berks, Chester, and Montgomery counties, responding to the needs of families in crisis.

Last year, Operation Holiday received nearly $85,000 in donations, which provided gift cards to 366 children and grocery gift cards to 189 families. These funds also supported local food pantries, ensuring that resources were available to those who need them most. This year, the program has partnered with 21 agencies in the tri-county area, referring 199 families with 403 children for assistance with gifts and food.

Operation Holiday operates with a commitment to ensuring that all contributions go directly to local families. All funds are collected and audited within a dedicated nonprofit foundation account managed by volunteers from MediaNews Group. Gift cards to local grocery stores are provided to families, allowing them to purchase holiday dinner ingredients and essential pantry staples.

And we have no idea what other people may be going through,” she said.
