Rediscovering Chrysler: 5 Overlooked Models from the 1980s
Chrysler celebrates a significant milestone in 2025, marking 100 years in the automotive industry. While the brand has produced iconic vehicles over the decades, such as the jet-powered Chrysler Turbine car and the contemporary HEMI-powered Chrysler 300C, many noteworthy models from the 1980s have faded into obscurity. This article revisits five underappreciated Chrysler cars from that era, exploring their unique features and the reasons they have been overshadowed by other models.
Unveiling the Chrysler TC by Maserati
One of the most intriguing yet overlooked models is the Chrysler TC by Maserati. Introduced in the late 1980s, this convertible represented a collaboration between the two automakers aimed at tapping into the luxury market. Despite its elegant design, the TC struggled to distinguish itself from the more affordable LeBaron convertible.
Equipped with a 2.2-liter inline-four engine that produced just 160 horsepower, the TC was not the powerhouse that many expected. A more powerful Maserati-derived 16-valve variant was rumored to offer 200 horsepower with a five-speed manual transmission, but the majority were sold with a three-speed automatic. The TC’s high price—around $33,000 in 1989, equivalent to over $86,000 today—did not help its sales, leading to just over 7,300 units produced in three years. Consequently, the TC is now considered a relatively affordable piece of automotive history, with auction prices seldom exceeding $15,000.
The Rare Chrysler Executive Limousine
Another gem from Chrysler’s past is the Chrysler Executive Limousine, a model produced in limited quantities with only around 1,500 examples ever made. Built on the K-car platform, this unique vehicle featured a combination of a Coupe and a four-door sedan, enhanced by the addition of a 24-inch stretch that created a 131-inch wheelbase.
Introduced in 1983 at a price of $21,900 (approximately $71,400 today), it was considered quite affordable for a limousine at the time. The Executive Limousine accommodated up to seven passengers and included luxurious features such as a powered glass partition and an audio system for rear occupants. Initially powered by a Mitsubishi-sourced 2.6-liter inline-four engine, it offered just 93 horsepower. In later years, a turbocharged 2.2-liter engine was introduced, providing a modest increase in performance.
The Executive Limousine serves as a testament to Chrysler’s innovation, yet it remains a rare find in the current market, with prices around $10,000 for used models.
Rediscovering the Chrysler Conquest
The Chrysler Conquest, a product of a joint venture with Mitsubishi, is another model that has been overlooked in the annals of automotive history. Essentially a rebadged Mitsubishi Starion, the Conquest made its mark with a turbocharged four-cylinder engine, delivering a respectable 176 horsepower. This power allowed the TSi variant to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 8.0 seconds, showcasing its sporty potential.
The 1986 widebody model added aggressive styling with blistered arches and 16-inch alloy wheels, appealing to enthusiasts. Nevertheless, the Conquest struggled to compete with popular Japanese models like the Toyota Supra and Nissan Z cars, leading to its decline in visibility. Today, it can still be found at auction for between $10,000 and $20,000, depending on the condition.
The Ambitious Laser Turbo
Chrysler’s Laser Turbo aimed to carve out a niche in the sports car market, despite its hatchback and front-wheel-drive configuration. Available with two engine options—an uninspiring naturally aspirated 2.2-liter inline-four and a turbocharged version producing 142 horsepower—the Laser was equipped with features that epitomized the 1980s, including a digital dashboard and optional voice alerts for minor issues.
Despite promotional claims of outperforming rivals such as the Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 and Ford Mustang GT, the Laser struggled to maintain its presence in the market. A total of 147,396 units were produced over three years, but it was ultimately discontinued, leaving behind a legacy overshadowed by its Dodge Daytona counterpart.
The Fifth Avenue’s Lasting Legacy
Finally, the Chrysler Fifth Avenue represents a more traditional luxury offering from the brand during the 1980s. While it had once been a prestigious model, by its 12th generation, it had diminished in size and opulence. The Fifth Avenue, particularly with the optional package, was still recognized for its luxurious features, such as button-tufted seating, plush carpets, and a host of convenience amenities.
Equipped with a 5.2-liter V8 engine and a three-speed automatic transmission, the Fifth Avenue provided a comfortable ride, albeit with performance that was not particularly remarkable. Today, well-maintained examples are rare but often available for under $10,000, making them an attractive option for those seeking a piece of Chrysler’s rich history.
The vehicles featured here illustrate the diverse offerings from Chrysler during a challenging decade for American automotive manufacturers. Although overshadowed by other models, these forgotten gems invite enthusiasts to explore a unique slice of automotive history, underscoring the importance of remembering all facets of a brand’s legacy.
