Veteran Credits Service Dog with Preventing Life-Threatening Stroke
A U.S. Army and Marine veteran from Colorado, Hank Ford, attributes his life-saving experience to his service dog, a yellow Labrador named Tommy. In February 2023, Tommy alerted Ford to a serious medical issue—an irregular heartbeat—that could have led to a stroke. Ford, who battles post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), emphasizes the significant role that service dogs can play in improving the quality of life for veterans.
On a typical morning, Tommy wakes Ford around 07:00. However, on that critical day in February, the dog sensed something was amiss and roused him earlier than usual. Ford recounted, “He was hitting me in the chest. He wasn’t coming up to my face. He was, he was literally hitting me in the chest.” This unusual behavior prompted Ford to seek immediate medical attention, where he discovered he was experiencing a dangerously rapid heartbeat. Doctors informed him that without Tommy’s intervention, he may not have woken up and could have suffered a massive stroke.
Ford’s experience highlights the transformative impact that service dogs can have on veterans. He stated, “Everybody that knows me, they’re just like, they can’t believe the difference in me.” He explained that many veterans hesitate to get a service dog due to concerns about societal perceptions. “A lot of veterans, they won’t get a dog because they think people look at you different when you’re walking through a store. But a dog makes a huge difference,” he added.
The connection between Ford and Tommy extends beyond mere companionship. Ford described Tommy as a guiding light during his darkest moments, saying, “Everybody always talks about, you know, there’s always a light at the end of the tunnel. It was a dark spot. He turned the lights on.”
In a time when mental health awareness for veterans is crucial, Ford’s story serves as a reminder of the potential benefits of service animals. As Ford continues to navigate life with PTSD, he remains grateful for the bond he shares with Tommy, who not only helped prevent a medical crisis but has also provided comfort and companionship.
The role of service dogs in assisting veterans with PTSD is gaining recognition. Organizations dedicated to training service animals are seeing an increase in demand as more veterans seek support. Ford’s experience illustrates how these animals can profoundly affect their owners’ lives, serving not just as pets but as vital partners in their journey toward recovery.
