New Filipino Market Opens in Bangor, Fulfilling Asian Grocery Demand

Residents of Bangor, Maine, now have access to authentic Filipino and Asian groceries with the recent opening of the Buena Vista Filipino Market. This new establishment, which opened its doors on January 31, 2025, at 1012 Stillwater Avenue, aims to cater to the growing demand for Asian food options in the area. Previously, many customers traveled to Portland to fulfill their cravings for Filipino ingredients and dishes.

Store manager George Baquiran explained that the decision to open a location in Bangor stemmed from feedback from local customers who often made the trek to Portland. “A lot of people go to Portland and they advised [the owner], why not put a store in Bangor?” Baquiran stated. The new market occupies a space that was formerly home to Betty’s Ice Cream, which closed in March 2025.

The market has quickly become a bustling hub for the local community, especially among immigrants from the Philippines and other Asian countries. Baquiran noted that these residents often faced challenges finding imported Asian products at typical grocery stores in the region. The opening of Buena Vista, just a month after the launch of a similar store, Glo’s Carinderia, in Belfast, reflects a growing interest in Asian food options across Maine.

Wide Variety of Offerings

Buena Vista Filipino Market features an extensive selection of packaged goods, including noodles, spices, sauces, and canned fish. Additionally, customers can find fresh produce such as meat, vegetables, and traditional breads like pandesal, a popular Filipino roll. One standout item is Halo-Halo, a beloved Filipino dessert made with shaved ice, evaporated or coconut milk, and a mix of sweet ingredients topped with ube ice cream.

The market also caters to diverse needs by offering a range of skin care products, fruit juices, and ready-to-eat dishes. Notably, customers can order chicken from Jollibee, a well-known Filipino fast food chain that currently has no locations in New England.

A Personal Journey

Baquiran, who immigrated to the United States 40 years ago, has had a long career in the garment industry. He decided to join the market to explore a different venture in his retirement. “I became more into pasta,” he joked, reflecting on how his diet has evolved over the years. “But I still cannot forget my culture.”

The opening of Buena Vista Filipino Market not only fills a gap in the Bangor area but also highlights the importance of cultural diversity in local food offerings. With its wide array of authentic products and commitment to serving the community, the market is set to become a cherished destination for those seeking a taste of home.
