Flyers Face Tough Back-to-Back Challenge Against Lightning
PHILADELPHIA — The Philadelphia Flyers are gearing up for a challenging back-to-back series against the Tampa Bay Lightning, with the first match taking place at the Xfinity Mobile Arena on Saturday night, followed by a rematch on Monday night. The Flyers face a formidable opponent; Tampa Bay has secured eight consecutive victories and is actively competing for a top position in the Atlantic Division.
This series marks a significant moment for the Flyers, as they have not faced the same opponent in consecutive games at the same venue since May 3-4, 2021, when they played against Pittsburgh. The unusual scheduling was largely influenced by the COVID-19 pandemic, making this matchup all the more notable.
Preparation for a Playoff-Like Atmosphere
During Saturday’s morning skate, forward Garnet Hathaway acknowledged the unique challenge of playing a powerhouse team like the Lightning twice in quick succession. “There’s a mindset,” Hathaway stated. “You look at it like it’s a playoff series. This game is going to make a big impact on the next 120 minutes. How we prepare now is going to get our feet rolling.” He emphasized the need for the Flyers to play aggressively, respecting their opponents’ skill level.
Head coach Rick Tocchet echoed Hathaway’s sentiments, recognizing the challenge posed by Tampa Bay’s top line, which includes stars such as Nikita Kucherov and Brandon Point. “That top line is hard to shut down,” Tocchet remarked. “You have to pay attention and be aware of changes because they use the weak side a lot. It’s almost like chess. You got to read the play two moves ahead.”
Injury Updates and Team Dynamics
The Flyers have faced their share of injuries, with Jamie Drysdale and Bobby Brink participating in the morning skate but remaining out of the lineup. Drysdale is currently on injured reserve and will miss both games against Tampa Bay. Travis Konecny did not participate in the skate, although Tocchet noted that Konecny is feeling somewhat better but not ready to return.
In terms of team dynamics, Matvei Michkov skated on a line with Trevor Zegras and Christian Dvorak during the morning practice. Defenseman Emil Andrae has been performing well, boasting a plus-minus of +13, the highest among the team’s defensemen and just three behind the overall leader, Noah Cates.
On the goaltending front, Samuel Ersson will start for the Flyers on Saturday. Since December 4, he has secured only one victory, which came against Chicago on December 23. The Flyers, known for their defensive strategies, currently rank fourth in the NHL for shots allowed per game at 25.5, trailing closely behind the Carolina Hurricanes, who lead with 24.6.
Reflecting on their past encounters, the Flyers experienced mixed results against the Pittsburgh Penguins during their last back-to-back series, winning the first game decisively with a score of 7-2, only to lose the second game 7-3. This recent history adds an extra layer of intrigue to their upcoming matches against the Lightning.
The Flyers will be looking to harness their preparation and resilience as they take on the Lightning, aiming for positive results in this crucial series.
