99 Ranch Market in Westwood Reopens After Fatal Crash
UPDATE: The 99 Ranch Market in Westwood has reopened today, just six days after a tragic crash claimed the lives of three individuals and injured six others. The reopening, which took place on October 25, 2023, has sparked mixed feelings among customers regarding safety and community resilience.
Last Thursday, a 92-year-old woman reportedly lost control of her vehicle, crashing through the store’s windows after hitting a bicyclist nearby. The victims, identified as store employees Zih Dao (28) and Deris Renoj (42), along with customer Leo Mateo Larita (52), tragically lost their lives in this devastating incident. Six other victims sustained injuries, with varying degrees of severity, according to fire officials.
The bakery section, where the crash occurred, remains boarded up and closed, serving as a grim reminder of the events. Despite this, many community members expressed relief that the store has reopened. “I’m happy they’re reopening, but of course, I feel sorry for the three victims,” said customer Emma Xu, who visited the store to pay her respects.
Friends and customers have been leaving flowers and candles outside the market to honor those who lost their lives. The Los Angeles Police Department has stated that, as of now, the driver does not face charges, as investigators believe the crash was an accident. However, the incident has ignited discussions about whether California’s regulations for elderly drivers could prevent future tragedies.
The reopening of the 99 Ranch Market is a significant moment for the local community, demonstrating resilience in the face of tragedy. As the store resumes normal operations, many patrons are grappling with their feelings of safety while shopping. Local officials continue to monitor the situation as the community begins to heal.
Residents are urged to engage in conversations about road safety and the potential need for changes in driving regulations for elderly individuals. The impact of this crash will resonate in Westwood for some time, as the community mourns its losses and seeks to move forward.
Stay tuned for further updates as investigations continue and the community rallies together.
