Abby Cornwell and GG Dominish Shine at Euclid Sectional Wrestling

UPDATE: High school wrestling stars Abby Cornwell and GG Dominish dominated the Euclid Sectional on March 1, 2023, showcasing their prowess as they both claimed individual titles in the 110 and 115-pound weight classes. The competition marked a significant step in their journey towards the state championships, as both athletes aim for the top of the podium once again this season.

In just a combined seven minutes on the mat, Cornwell and Dominish recorded an impressive seven pins, leading the Pirates to a strong third-place finish with 117 points. Dominish, who placed third in the state last season, demonstrated her skill by finishing all three of her matches in the first period. “It’s honestly cleaning stuff up for us,” Dominish stated. “I’ve missed some time… it’s just having everything down that we want to work.”

Cornwell also showcased her technique during the finals against Kirtland’s Ahnai Welchans. After a strategic first period, Cornwell executed a double leg takedown, which set up her victory. “This year I’ve noticed a lot more of putting moves together,” she explained, emphasizing the mental aspect of wrestling that she has been honing.

The Perry Pirates not only celebrated Cornwell and Dominish’s triumphs but also welcomed two other district qualifiers, the Kutscher sisters. Eva Kutscher secured second place at 235 pounds, while Emily Kutscher finished third at 170 pounds. The supportive environment in the wrestling room has fostered a sense of family among the boys and girls teams. Cornwell noted, “Everyone gets along and we understand each other’s feelings. We’re all in there working toward one goal.”

Meanwhile, Riverside freshman London Davis made headlines in her first sectional appearance, achieving victory at 120 pounds with a pin in her quarterfinal match. Davis, who improved her season record to 22-7, demonstrated remarkable adaptability and focus as she transitioned from her first match to the semifinal. “Kamuri was critiquing me after that first match. It’s fun knowing that you’re going into it with a bunch of hard workers,” she said, underscoring the positive influence of her wrestling room.

Other noteworthy performances included Lake Catholic’s Kaila Gridiron (105 pounds) and Harvey’s Giselle Moreno (190 pounds), both of whom secured individual titles at their respective weights. Various athletes also qualified for the next stage of competition, including Harvey’s Sophia Turner (170, 2nd) and Beachwood’s Brooklyn Pryor (135, 2nd).
