Hobart Library Hosts Read to a Dog Event with Comfort Canines

UPDATE: The Hobart Library is buzzing with excitement as it hosts a special Read to a Dog event featuring therapy dogs, aimed at providing a unique reading experience for children. The event, designed for school-aged kids, promotes literacy while allowing participants to interact with calm and well-behaved comfort dogs in a safe environment.

Just announced by library branch manager Jo Bonner, this program offers an invaluable opportunity for kids like Liam Rogers, age four, who recently participated by reading to Michael, a five-year-old K-9 Comfort Dog. “The goal is to give children a calming break after a full day or week of school,” Bonner stated.

The Read to a Dog program typically takes place on Fridays after school hours, attracting families eager for positive experiences. “We thought this would be a good experience for him,” said Liam’s mother, Melissa Rogers, as she watched her son bond with Michael. “Liam always enjoys it here.”

Handlers like Dan Fulkerson, a trainer and volunteer with Lutheran Church Charities, lead these sessions, bringing comfort dogs to various locations, including nursing homes and hospitals. Fulkerson noted that the therapeutic effects of petting animals can significantly reduce stress levels: “When you pet an animal, your heart rate goes down, your blood pressure goes down, and that leads to relaxation.”

This initiative not only focuses on literacy but also enhances emotional well-being. Fulkerson emphasized the importance of empathy, stating, “Past participants have shared positive experiences, and we aim to continue spreading joy and comfort.”

The Lutheran Church Charities, based in Northbrook, Illinois, oversees the K-9 Comfort Dog program across 27 states. Local community churches, including Hobart’s Trinity Lutheran Church, collaborate to provide trained volunteers and ensure the dogs are well cared for.

Families are encouraged to join the upcoming sessions, as feedback from participants highlights the event’s significant impact. “He’s so soft,” Liam said, introducing himself to Michael while petting the gentle dog. “I think he likes me.”

As the event continues to gain popularity, the Hobart Library remains committed to fostering a nurturing environment where children can thrive, learn, and find comfort in the presence of these extraordinary canine companions.
