Apple Unveils Vision Pro Upgrade with M5 Chip for $3,499
UPDATE: Apple has just announced a significant upgrade to its Vision Pro augmented reality headset, now featuring the powerful M5 chip, promising to revolutionize user experience. The enhanced headset maintains its price of $3,499 and will be available for pre-order immediately, with general availability starting on October 22, 2023.
The newly introduced M5 chip delivers an impressive 50 percent faster AI performance and boosts image quality by allowing the device to display 10 percent more pixels on its micro-OLED screens. This means sharper images and clearer text, essential for immersive experiences. The upgraded refresh rate of up to 120 Hertz significantly reduces motion blur, ensuring smoother visuals, especially during Mac Virtual Display use.
Equipped with a 10-core CPU featuring six efficiency cores and four performance cores, the M5 chip offers 15 percent faster multi-threaded performance compared to its predecessor, the M4. Apple’s revamped GPU architecture integrates neural accelerators in each core, enabling AI-supported functions to run significantly faster. According to an Apple statement, third-party AI features can operate up to two times faster than in the first-generation Vision Pro.
In addition to performance enhancements, Apple introduces a new Dual Knit Band for improved comfort. This innovative design features a unique double rib structure, providing better balance with flexible fabric ribs and tungsten inserts. The band comes in sizes S, M, and L and is available for purchase at $99 (approximately €85), compatible with both the new and first-generation Vision Pro.
Battery life also sees improvements, offering up to two and a half hours of general use and up to three hours of video playback on a single charge. However, the external battery pack requirement remains, a point of contention among critics questioning the system’s portability. The headset continues to weigh between 600 and 650 grams, unchanged in its heft despite the enhancements.
Apple’s Vision Pro comes in three storage options: 256 GB, 512 GB, and 1 TB. The headset operates on the latest VisionOS 26, which introduces new features including persistent widgets, enhanced personas, and spatial scenes powered by generative AI. It also retains the R1 chip, processing input from twelve cameras, five sensors, and six microphones, delivering display images within twelve milliseconds.
Despite these advancements, the Vision Pro is projected to remain a niche product, with Apple having sold fewer than 1 million units worldwide in its first year. As Apple continues to innovate, tech enthusiasts and potential buyers will be keenly watching how this upgraded headset performs in the competitive AR landscape.
