UPDATE: An artillery shell detonated over California’s Interstate 5 on Saturday, striking a California Highway Patrol (CHP) vehicle during a Marine Corps demonstration. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, but the patrol car sustained damage from debris.

The incident unfolded during the U.S. Marine Corps’ 250th Amphibious Capabilities Demonstration at Camp Pendleton. CHP officers were on the scene supporting a traffic break when the 155mm artillery round detonated prematurely in mid-air, prompting urgent safety concerns.

“This was an unusual and concerning situation,” stated CHP Border Division Chief Tony Coronado, who identified himself as an active Marine. He emphasized that it is highly uncommon for live-fire training activities to occur over an active freeway, raising alarms about public safety.

Officials from the Marine Corps are investigating, with Capt. Gregory Dreibelbis confirming the preliminary report of the airborne detonation. “The demonstration went through a rigorous safety evaluation,” he noted, adding that firing was suspended following established safety protocols.

In a precautionary measure, California Governor Gavin Newsom had previously closed the section of I-5 ahead of the event. Newsom criticized the decision to conduct such demonstrations over civilian routes, stating, “This could have killed someone.” He condemned the use of military demonstrations in populated areas as reckless and dangerous.

The CHP has filed an internal report on the incident, recommending an after-action review to improve coordination around future training events. As a result of this alarming incident, additional live-fire demonstrations have been canceled, underscoring the serious nature of the situation.

This incident highlights significant concerns regarding the safety protocols and decision-making processes involved in military demonstrations near public roadways. As authorities continue to investigate, the public is left to wonder about the implications for future military exercises and the safety of civilians in the vicinity.

Stay tuned for further updates as this story develops. The situation remains critical, and the safety of the public must be prioritized in all future military training operations.
