Aspiration Co-Founder Joseph Sanberg Pleads Guilty to Fraud
BREAKING: Aspiration co-founder Joseph Sanberg has just pled guilty to two counts of wire fraud in a federal court in Los Angeles. This urgent development comes as Sanberg faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison for defrauding investors out of a staggering $248 million.
The plea took place Monday in the United States District Court for the Central District of California. Sentencing is set for February 23, 2026, at 11 a.m. PST, marking an important next step in a case that has captured national attention due to its ties with the NBA and the LA Clippers.
Sanberg’s guilty plea is linked to a scheme involving a controversial $300 million sponsorship deal with the Clippers, announced in September 2021. This deal included a jersey patch component and signage in the team’s new arena in Inglewood, California. Four months later, Aspiration entered a separate $28 million sponsorship agreement with Clippers star Kawhi Leonard.
During the court proceedings, Sanberg’s attorney, Marc Mukasey, defended his client, stating, “Mr. Sanberg was working to bring about a prosperous and successful company… We agree that he stepped over the line.” This statement highlights the complexity of the case as it unfolds.
The NBA is currently investigating whether the Clippers, under owner Steve Ballmer, violated league rules by circumventing the salary cap through the sponsorship arrangements with Aspiration. Notably, in the same month the sponsorship was announced, Ballmer reportedly invested $50 million in Aspiration, raising eyebrows about possible collusion.
Sanberg declined to comment on the case after the hearing, directing questions to Mukasey, who refrained from discussing potential cooperation with the NBA’s ongoing investigation, led by the law firm Wachtell Lipton. Mukasey stated, “We’re just happy that we got through today’s proceeding and that Joe accepted responsibility for what he’s charged with.”
This case has significant implications for both the NBA and corporate governance, as it raises questions about accountability and transparency in sponsorship deals. As the story develops, the sports community and investors alike are watching closely.
Stay tuned for more updates on Sanberg’s sentencing and the ongoing NBA investigation as details emerge.
