Bay FC Ends Season with 1-0 Loss; Coach Montoya Steps Down
UPDATE: Bay FC has concluded its challenging second season in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) with a 1-0 loss against Racing Louisville on Sunday, marking a disappointing end to a tumultuous year. The defeat, which took place at Louisville’s home ground, caps off a season that saw the club struggle with internal turmoil and coaching changes.
In a match that featured a resilient Bay FC defense, Ella Hase scored the game’s only goal just three minutes after halftime, sealing the fate of Bay FC. This loss represents the team’s 14th of the season, leaving them with a record of four wins and eight draws, placing them 13th out of 14 teams in the league standings.
“We didn’t end the way we would’ve liked to,” said coach Albertin Montoya, who guided the team through a season filled with challenges. “I also have to say thank you to the players and to Bay FC, because regardless of the score or where we were sitting in the standings, they never stopped competing and playing for each other.” Montoya’s departure as head coach was confirmed earlier this month amid an investigation into claims of a “toxic” workplace.
The match marked the end of Montoya’s tenure after he announced his resignation in September. His leadership faced scrutiny throughout the season, which was marred by controversies and poor performance on the field. The team is now left to regroup as it heads into its third year, with Montoya’s exit signaling a new direction.
Adding to the changes, Brady Stewart, the team president, also stepped down last month. Stewart played a significant role in organizing the club’s most notable event of the season, a match at Oracle Park that attracted over 35,000 fans.
Despite the overall struggles, defender Caprice Dydasco achieved a remarkable milestone by completing every minute of the season, earning her “iron woman” status. She is the first player in Bay FC history to achieve this feat and joins a select group of only 40 players in the league to have accomplished such a continuous performance.
The loss against Racing Louisville extends Bay FC’s winless streak to 15 matches, with their last victory occurring on June 7 against Portland. The team’s performance this season has raised concerns about its future viability after finishing with a record of 11-14-1 in their inaugural season.
As the club prepares for the upcoming season, fans and analysts alike are watching closely to see how the new leadership will take shape and what strategies will be implemented to improve performance. The urgency for a turnaround is palpable, as Bay FC looks to restore its competitive edge in the NWSL.
Stay tuned for further updates on Bay FC as they navigate this transitional period and prepare for a new chapter in their franchise history.
