Dodgers Survive Thrilling Ninth, Set Up World Series Game 7
UPDATE: In a heart-stopping finish, the Los Angeles Dodgers narrowly defeated the Toronto Blue Jays 3-1 on October 27, 2023, at the Rogers Centre, forcing a decisive Game 7 in the World Series. The tension peaked in the bottom of the ninth inning as the Dodgers made a spectacular game-ending double play, keeping their championship hopes alive.
The game unfolded dramatically, with the crowd roaring throughout the nine innings. The atmosphere turned electric as the Dodgers secured their victory, tying the series at three games apiece. “Game 7. Amazing,” exclaimed Dodgers’ Enrique Hernandez, who played a pivotal role in the final moments. “This is what we dream of, ever since we were little kids.”
The decisive play came when Toronto shortstop Andres Gimenez lined a ball toward the infield, which Hernandez expertly caught, leading to a double play that eliminated the potential tying run, Addison Barger. The dramatic ending shocked fans and players alike.
“Dude, I didn’t have enough time to think about it,” said Dodgers pitcher Tyler Glasnow, who was called from the bullpen in a tense moment. “I just thought, ‘Please don’t be a hit.'”
The game was marked by a third-inning rally from the Dodgers, highlighted by a two-run single from struggling star Mookie Betts. The Blue Jays managed to respond with a run from George Springer, but the Dodgers’ pitching held strong under pressure.
In a chaotic bottom of the ninth, the Blue Jays appeared poised to tie the game when Barger hit a powerful drive that wedged between the outfield padding. Confusion ensued as players scrambled, but the play was ultimately ruled a ground-rule double, sending Barger back to second base.
“I’ve been here a long time,” said Blue Jays manager John Schneider. “I haven’t seen a ball get lodged, ever. Just caught a tough break there.”
As the ninth unfolded, Dodgers’ pitcher Roki Sasaki struggled, hitting a batter before the wild sequence began. Glasnow, who had been warming up, swiftly replaced Sasaki and managed to close out the game with decisive plays.
This victory marks the Dodgers as the eighth team in World Series history to execute a game-ending double play while facing elimination, and the first since the 1972 Reds. The anticipation for Game 7 is palpable, with the series showcasing extraordinary performances and heart-stopping moments.
“Baseball deserves a Game 7,” Hernandez added. “This has been a great, great World Series. The fact that we’re getting a Game 7 is well deserved. Both teams have played their butts off.”
Game 7 is scheduled for Saturday night, promising another thrilling chapter in this competitive World Series. Fans are eagerly awaiting the showdown, which is set to begin at 8:00 PM ET. Stay tuned for what is sure to be an unforgettable finale.
