El Reno Unites to Honor Fallen Officer Sgt. Thomas Duran
UPDATE: The city of El Reno, Oklahoma is in mourning following the tragic death of Sgt. Thomas Duran, who was struck by a vehicle on October 17. Community members are rallying together to honor his legacy and support his family during this difficult time.
Last night, an emotional honor walk took place at OU Medical, where family, friends, and law enforcement officials from across the state gathered to pay their respects. Chief Ken Brown expressed the profound loss felt by the department, stating, “We took that call knowing it’s one of yours, one of your own, and it’s difficult.”
In a heartwarming gesture, Sgt. Duran’s family honored his wishes to be an organ donor, demonstrating his commitment to giving back even in his final moments. “It’s admirable beyond words that even in the worst times, Sgt. Duran is still giving back to this community,” said Mark Nelson, President of the Fraternal Order of Police.
The community is also showing its support through acts of kindness and solidarity. At the Elks Lodge, a fundraiser is underway to assist the Duran family. “100% of everything that comes in tonight, including tips, is going right back to the family,” said Jared Holden. A $10 spaghetti dinner is being served, providing an opportunity for residents to come together, heal, and support one another.
Dozens of flowers have been placed on top of a police car outside the El Reno Police Station, creating a poignant tribute to a beloved officer who served his community with dedication. The turnout at the Elks Lodge has been overwhelming, with attendees reflecting on the strength and unity of the El Reno community. “It’s been a beautiful coming together as well to support this event,” Holden added. “You don’t just have people from our community come in and support it; you have people from other communities.”
As the community continues to grieve, the support for Sgt. Duran’s family remains steadfast. The El Reno Police Department is urging residents to honor his memory and contribute to the ongoing fundraising efforts. The love and respect for Sgt. Duran are palpable, and his impact on the community will be remembered for years to come.
