Father of Cancer Patient Describes ‘Inhumane’ ICE Conditions
UPDATE: Ruben Torres Maldonado, father of a cancer-stricken teenager, reveals shocking details about the “inhumane conditions” he faced at the ICE facility in Broadview after being detained on October 18. Speaking exclusively to ABC7 Chicago, Torres expressed deep gratitude for being reunited with his daughter, Ofelia, just one week after his release from Department of Homeland Security (DHS) custody.
Torres, who was apprehended by federal agents outside a Home Depot in Niles shortly after Ofelia returned home from hospital treatment for stage 4 cancer, described a sense of helplessness as he witnessed his American dream slip away. “I’m so happy… thanks to the people who support my family in this situation,” he said, his voice filled with emotion.
During his detention, Torres faced distressing conditions, sharing that there were only two bathrooms for numerous detainees and just one functional shower without curtains. “You practically slept on top of garbage,” he recounted. His harrowing testimony was heard by a federal judge earlier this week, prompting a ruling that demanded immediate improvements in the facility’s living conditions.
Authorities confirm that DHS maintains it acted lawfully during Torres’ arrest, citing his history of reckless driving and alleged non-compliance at the time of detainment. Despite the judge’s order declaring his detention unlawful, Torres is now required to wear an ankle monitor, limiting his ability to work in the paint and construction industry where he has built a life since arriving in the U.S. in 2003.
The emotional toll of his detention weighed heavily on Torres, who constantly thought of his family during his time in custody. “If I were deported, it would be very difficult for my wife to carry the burden, especially with my daughter’s condition,” he said.
Ofelia, who continues to battle cancer with upcoming treatments, expressed relief at her father’s return. “We spend time together just being lazy honestly just watching movies… I am so happy to have him back. Those two weeks without him were really hard,” she shared.
Following the judge’s ruling, Torres is now eligible to apply for cancellation of removal, which his legal team is actively pursuing. This development underscores the urgent need for asylum seekers and detainees to be treated with dignity and respect.
As the situation evolves, Torres’ story highlights the human impact of immigration policies, drawing attention to the struggles families face in the face of systemic challenges. The community continues to rally around Torres and his family, raising awareness about the conditions within detention facilities.
