UPDATE: A tragic incident has struck the FDNY as firefighter Patrick D. Brady, an 11-year veteran, died in the line of duty while responding to an “all-hands fire” in Brooklyn on October 7, 2023. Mayor Eric Adams confirmed the heartbreaking news, stating that Brady suffered a medical episode on the roof of 9407 Kings Highway near Brownsville and went into cardiac arrest.

Emergency response teams treated Brady at the scene before he was rushed to Brookdale University Hospital Medical Center, where he succumbed to his condition. “Firefighter Patrick Brady gave his life protecting the city we all love; there is no sacrifice that is more selfless than the actions that took place this evening,” Adams expressed in a poignant statement. He extended his deepest condolences to Brady’s wife, Kara, and his entire family during this devastating time.

FDNY Commissioner Robert S. Tucker echoed the sentiment of loss, stating that the entire department is heartbroken. “Firefighter Brady came from a family of firefighters—all dedicated to protecting the lives of their fellow New Yorkers,” Adams added, highlighting Brady’s legacy within a family of heroes. His brothers, Jimmy and Brian, along with several cousins and uncles, also serve in the FDNY.

Brady’s death marks the somber milestone of being the 1,163rd member of the department to die in the line of duty. The last member to fall was Paramedic Salih Abdur Rahman, who passed away on October 29, 2022, after completing a shift at the FDNY Fire Academy on Randall’s Island.

As the FDNY mourns this profound loss, officials urge the community to support the Brady family and all those affected by this tragedy. The department continues to remind New Yorkers of the bravery and dedication that firefighters exhibit daily in protecting lives and property.

This developing story highlights the risks first responders face and the deep commitment they have to their communities. As more details emerge, the FDNY and the city of New York will honor the memory of Firefighter Patrick D. Brady and all those who serve in the line of duty.
