UPDATE: Exciting hands-on learning unfolded today as Hays Elementary fourth graders participated in the fourth annual Lehigh County Agriculture Education Day at the Agri-Plex on the Allentown Fairgrounds. Students engaged in interactive activities designed to teach them about local agriculture and its vital role in their community.

On October 21, 2025, young learners were seen shaking milk to make butter and tasting freshly made applesauce. This educational event, organized collaboratively by the Allentown Fair, Lehigh County Agricultural Society, Lehigh County Granges, Lehigh County Farm Bureau, Penn State Agricultural Extension, and 4-H, aims to provide insights into where their food comes from and the significance of agriculture in everyday life.

During the event, students had the unique opportunity to touch a chick, guided by Kelly Weisner, a 4-H Penn State Agricultural Extension educator. Other hands-on experiences included learning about sheep from Roger Bowman, owner of Winterside Farm, and making applesauce with assistance from Richard Koenig.

“The goal is to connect children with agriculture, helping them understand the processes behind their food,” said one of the organizers. This immersive experience not only educates but also fosters a connection between students and their local farming community.

As the event continues to unfold, students are expected to participate in various other activities, including interactive lessons on crop cultivation and animal care. These experiences are designed not only to educate but also to inspire a future generation of farmers and consumers who value local agriculture.

Stay tuned for more updates on how this event is shaping the minds of young students in Allentown. The impact of such educational initiatives is crucial for fostering awareness and appreciation of the agricultural community among the youth today.
