Honolulu Faces Heavy Rain, Mariners and Flyers Urged to Prepare
UPDATE: Honolulu is bracing for significant rainfall as the National Weather Service warns residents and travelers to prepare for typical rainy conditions starting Saturday and continuing into early next week. A dissipating front west of Kauai is weakening, leading to a surge of trade wind showers primarily affecting windward and mauka areas.
Authorities confirm that southeasterly winds are expected to strengthen today, pushing rain towards the eastern and southeastern slopes of the islands. While trade winds will shift slightly from the east, no substantial moisture sources have been detected, indicating that residents should remain vigilant for pockets of intensified rainfall.
Aviation alerts are in effect as PHOG may experience moderate turbulence and low-level wind shear later today, despite generally favorable flying conditions. The National Weather Service emphasizes that all aviators should heed these warnings as conditions could change rapidly.
Mariners are also on alert with a Small Craft Advisory in place until early Saturday for waters around Maui County and the Big Island. Forecasts predict combined seas exceeding 10 feet due to a moderate to large northwestern swell. Surf conditions along northern and western shores may trigger a High Surf Advisory, raising concerns for dangerous surf conditions.
Additionally, the National Weather Service warns of potential coastal flooding during early morning peak tides, compounded by heightened water levels and monthly tide peaks. As trade winds strengthen, east shore surf is expected to become increasingly choppy.
Despite these various advisories, officials state that critical fire weather conditions remain unlikely this week in Honolulu. Current relative humidity levels are near seasonal norms, and wind speeds are only expected to reach moderate strengths, keeping fire risks below critical thresholds.
Residents and travelers are urged to stay informed as forecasts are subject to change with evolving weather patterns. Regular updates from the National Weather Service will provide further details on the situation.
