Man Arrested for Impersonating Attorney at Oklahoma Jail
UPDATE: A man has been arrested for allegedly impersonating an attorney to gain access to the Oklahoma County Detention Center on October 13, reportedly to see his girlfriend, who is incarcerated. Aaron Oldham, 30, claimed to be the attorney of Christine Hillier, who was booked on October 6 on charges from Douglas County, Nevada.
Authorities confirm that Oldham entered the attorney visitation area, falsely presenting himself as Hillier’s legal representative. While there, he filled out power of attorney paperwork and was allowed to meet Hillier. After a brief visit that included hugging and kissing, Oldham was arrested later that day when investigators discovered he lacked legal credentials.
“It’s a silly misunderstanding and I will never interact with that system again, hopefully,” Oldham told reporters. He emphasized his status as a “very law-abiding person,” but declined to elaborate on the incident.
Legal experts like Ed Blau, a defense attorney in Oklahoma County, expressed disbelief over the security breach. “I’ve been to the jail a couple of hundred times in my career, and I’ve never seen a situation where somebody out of the blue showed up and pretended to either be a bonds person or an attorney,” Blau stated.
The Oklahoma County Detention Center has acknowledged the error. A spokesperson confirmed that a staff member failed to follow established verification protocols, allowing Oldham access. That employee has since faced disciplinary action, and all staff in the attorney visitation area have undergone retraining to prevent similar incidents.
District Commissioner Jason Lowe, who is also a practicing attorney, highlighted the need for improvements at the facility. “It’s concerning. We need more staff and more funding at the Oklahoma County Detention Center,” he remarked. Lowe has committed to ensuring such lapses do not occur in the future, asking, “How do we avoid it? This should never happen again.”
As of now, it remains unclear if Hillier will face any additional charges related to this incident. The situation continues to develop, raising serious questions about security protocols at the detention center and the integrity of the legal visitation process.
Stay tuned for updates as authorities investigate further into this alarming breach.
