Mariners’ World Series Dreams Dashed in Heartbreaking Game 7 Loss
UPDATE: The Seattle Mariners’ hopes for their first World Series appearance have been shattered after a dramatic 4-3 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays in Game 7 of the American League Championship Series on October 16, 2023.
With just eight outs remaining, the Mariners let victory slip through their fingers, leaving players and fans heartbroken. “I hate to use the word failure, but it’s a failure,” said Seattle star Cal Raleigh, articulating the disappointment felt throughout the organization.
The Mariners entered this postseason with sky-high expectations after clinching their first AL West title since 2001. However, that World Series ambition remains unfulfilled. Center fielder Julio Rodríguez expressed the collective pain, stating, “Obviously, it hurts. That’s also part of the game, too.”
Seattle arrived in Toronto with a 3-2 series lead, needing just one win to secure a historic trip to the World Series. Despite jumping to an early lead in Game 7, the Mariners could not hold on. Rodríguez gave them a 1-0 lead in the first with a double that set up a run, and his fourth postseason home run in the third made it 2-1. Raleigh added to the tally with his fifth postseason homer in the fifth, pushing the lead to 3-1.
But the momentum shifted dramatically in the seventh inning when Eduard Bazardo entered the game. After walking a batter and allowing a single, he faced George Springer, who crushed a three-run homer that turned the tide. “You make your decisions, and sometimes you have to live and die with it,” Mariners manager Dan Wilson reflected on his choice to bring in Bazardo over closer Andres Muñoz.
Seattle’s offense faltered in the final four innings, failing to secure another hit. The season ended in heartbreaking fashion as Leo Rivas, Dominic Canzone, and Rodríguez struck out against Jeff Hoffman in the ninth inning. “I know this stings and there’s no question that it’s going to sting,” Wilson stated, highlighting the emotional weight of the loss.
This defeat marks a significant moment for the Mariners, who had never advanced past Game 6 in prior postseason appearances. “All of us now have had a taste of how close we can get,” Wilson added, emphasizing the determination to return stronger next season.
As fans process this loss, the Mariners’ future remains uncertain. The offseason will bring questions about roster changes and strategies, but the desire to reach the World Series will drive this team forward. For now, the Mariners must grapple with the harsh reality of coming so close yet falling short.
The Blue Jays, meanwhile, will celebrate their first trip to the World Series since 1993, while the Mariners reflect on what could have been. This loss will linger, but hope remains for a brighter future in the coming seasons.
