UPDATE: The MTA has activated its specialized de-icer trains and jet blowers to combat heavy snow accumulation across New York City’s transit system as winter storms continue to disrupt service. This urgent response aims to keep over 220 miles of outdoor subway tracks and commuter railroads clear as New Yorkers navigate challenging weather conditions.

Officials confirmed that these de-icing trains, modified from retired subway cars, utilize tanks to spray de-icing fluid on the third rail, while powerful jet blowers—repurposed from jet engines—generate approximately 2,500 pounds of thrust to blast snow and ice off tracks. “It’s no surprise we use them to great effect during big winter storms,” stated Erika Schaub, Senior Director of Emergency Management and Preparedness at the New York City Transit Department.

Many New Yorkers have reported difficulties getting around due to unshoveled bus stops following recent storms. In response, the MTA emphasizes that snow removal is a collaborative effort between the New York City Departments of Sanitation (DSNY) and Transportation (DOT). DSNY is responsible for stops without shelters, while a DOT contractor, JCDecaux, clears snow from bus shelter benches. “We take seriously the need for New Yorkers to be able to get on and off buses safely,” explained Frank Farrell, Executive Vice President of the NYC Transit Department.

Residents have also expressed frustration over ongoing issues with digital screens at transit stations. Sheryl W. from Hamilton Heights raised concerns about the malfunctioning status board at the W 145 St-St Nicholas Av station, which has been out of service for months. The MTA has acknowledged a power issue with the board and is working with their external partner, Outfront, to expedite repairs.

New Yorkers are encouraged to report any issues with digital screens and signs through the MTA app or by contacting MTA customer service at 511. “We are aware of the situation and have reached out to escalate its replacement,” stated Shanifah Rieara, MTA Chief Customer Officer.

As the winter weather persists, the MTA continues to adapt and respond to maintain safe and reliable transit for all New Yorkers. Stay tuned for further updates on service conditions as officials work to address these urgent concerns.
