Rancher Slams Trump’s ‘Delusional’ Claims on Beef Prices
UPDATE: A South Dakota cattle rancher has sharply criticized former President Donald Trump, calling his recent comments on beef prices “delusional.” The backlash follows Trump’s claims that tariffs he imposed were the primary reason for ranchers’ improved market conditions.
During an appearance on MSNBC‘s “The Weekend” on October 14, 2023, Craig Bieber, vice president of the South Dakota Cattleman’s Beef Association, responded to Trump’s post on Truth Social. In his post, Trump stated, “The Cattle Ranchers, who I love, don’t understand that the only reason they are doing so well, for the first time in decades, is because I put Tariffs on cattle coming into the United States, including a 50% Tariff on Brazil.” He further claimed that without his intervention, ranchers would still be facing dire conditions.
Bieber rebutted Trump’s assertions directly, stating, “I think the president is delusional in the fact that, I mean, he had anything to do with these markets.” He emphasized that the cattle industry was already on an upward trajectory due to years of struggle marked by drought and a decreased cow herd.
“This market shift was anticipated by everyone in the industry who was self-aware,” Bieber added, pointing out that the tariffs imposed by Trump did not influence current market conditions.
The exchange highlights a growing rift between the former president and the agricultural community, which is crucial for the U.S. economy. As the beef market continues to evolve, ranchers are facing pressures not only from pricing but also from consumer demand and international trade dynamics.
As this story develops, stakeholders in the cattle industry are watching closely for further comments from Trump and any potential policy implications that could arise from this high-profile feud.
