UPDATE: Rivian has just revealed groundbreaking details about its upcoming 2026 R2 midsize SUV, set to revolutionize electric vehicle technology. In a recent shareholder letter, the company announced key advancements, including a new energy management control module and bi-directional charging capabilities.

The R2 is on track for delivery to customers starting in the first half of 2026, marking a significant milestone for Rivian. One of the standout features is the newly developed energy management control module (EMCM), strategically located at the back of the SUV’s battery pack. This innovative assembly consolidates critical technologies, including an inverter, into a single unit, enhancing efficiency.

A notable addition is the bidirectional vehicle-to-home (V2H) charger, allowing users to pull DC power from their R2 to power their homes. This setup transforms vehicle energy into usable AC power, creating a cost-effective power storage solution for homeowners. However, for this feature to operate, home chargers must support bidirectional charging.

Rivian has also confirmed that the R2 will utilize larger, round battery cells known as 4695 cells, which boast six times the energy capacity of the current 2170 cells used in the R1 models. Although the exact kWh capacity of the R2’s battery pack remains undisclosed, Rivian anticipates a remarkable 330-mile range per charge.

In a move to bolster its production capabilities, Rivian announced the completion of its Normal, Illinois factory’s R2 body shop and general assembly building, which spans 1.1 million square feet. Additionally, a 1.2 million square foot supplier park and logistics center has been established to support R2 assembly. The facility is expected to begin production in early 2026, with an ambitious goal of delivering up to 155,000 units annually.

Validation builds for the R2 are slated to commence by the end of 2025, with pre-production units expected to roll off the assembly line shortly after the new year begins. This rapid development signifies Rivian’s commitment to innovation in the EV market, aiming to compete effectively in the growing midsize SUV segment.

As the R2 prepares for launch, the automotive world will be watching closely. Rivian’s focus on sustainable energy solutions and advanced technology could reshape consumer expectations and industry standards. With a starting price projected under $50,000, the R2 is positioned to make electric mobility more accessible than ever.

Stay tuned for further updates on this exciting development as Rivian gears up for a transformative entry into the midsize SUV market!
