Safeway Holiday Ice Rink Opens in Union Square for Festive Season
UPDATE: The highly anticipated Safeway Holiday Ice Rink has officially opened in Union Square, San Francisco, sparking a wave of festive joy just in time for the holiday season. This year marks the rink’s 18th season, and it will remain open for skating through January 19, offering a vibrant atmosphere in the city’s bustling shopping district.
The rink, presented by Kaiser Permanente, is expected to attract crowds with special events, including lessons, dance parties, and drag performances. Local businesses surrounding Union Square are preparing for a significant increase in foot traffic as the holiday season kicks off.
Nnan Chotiphanomvivat, general manager of the Last Drop Tavern, stated, “It’s the most festive and vibrant time of the year for us,” highlighting the tavern’s transformation into a holiday destination with festive decor and specialty cocktails. Additionally, the Beacon Grand Hotel plans to launch its Holiday Tea at The Post Room right after Thanksgiving, featuring a delightful menu that includes scones and eggnog cheesecake.
This season also marks a cultural revival for Union Square, with several new pop-ups and enterprises opening. Notably, Dandelion Chocolate will operate a six-month pop-up, and a rotating holiday food market will bring new life to previously empty spaces. These efforts are part of the city’s Vacant to Vibrant program aimed at revitalizing downtown areas, as reported by KTVU.
Marisa Rodriguez, CEO of the Union Square Alliance, expressed optimism about the rink’s reopening, noting it as a key element in the district’s ongoing revival. With the recent commitment from Macy’s to reimagine their flagship store in Union Square, the area is set to become an even greater commercial draw. “This is an iconic location in San Francisco. Why not reimagine it and meet the moment?” Rodriguez added.
Tickets for the ice rink are priced at $20 for adults and $15 for children aged eight and under. The rink operates daily from 10 AM to 11 PM, with special hours on New Year’s Eve, closing at 9:30 PM.
As the holiday season unfolds, Union Square is poised to fill with both locals and tourists, eager to enjoy the festivities and support the local economy. Don’t miss out on the fun—head to Union Square for a memorable skating experience this winter!
