Urgent Call for Earthquake Preparedness as ShakeOut Approaches
UPDATE: As the annual ShakeOut approaches, experts emphasize the critical need for earthquake preparedness, following the devastating impacts of past quakes, including the 1933 Long Beach earthquake that claimed 115 lives. Recent findings highlight alarming trends in human behavior that lead to injuries during earthquakes, underscoring the importance of staying put when the ground shakes.
In a reflective study, Lori Dengler, an emeritus professor of geology at Cal Poly Humboldt, shared harrowing accounts from the December 21, 1954 earthquake, where victims like Mrs. Hess and Jeannie Thompson were injured simply for moving during the quake. Both women were located over 30 miles from the epicenter, yet their instinct to flee resulted in serious injuries. Dengler’s research reveals a troubling correlation: the further individuals move during a quake, the higher their risk of injury.
The data drawn from studies of significant earthquakes, including the 1989 Loma Prieta and 1994 Northridge events, shows that many injuries stem from people rushing outside, often resulting in accidents like trips and falls. Dengler pointed out a tragic incident during the Northridge quake, where a young mother broke her neck while attempting to rescue her child, highlighting the instinctive but dangerous rush to safety.
With the ShakeOut drill set for October 19, 2023, officials urge communities to focus on earthquake resilience. California has made significant strides in building codes since the 1933 quake, which prompted the Field Act requiring schools to withstand seismic activity. However, older structures and private institutions remain vulnerable, necessitating urgent retrofits.
Dengler stresses the importance of not only structural integrity but also the human response during a quake. “If we can get everyone to restrain those inner instincts to run out the door, we can significantly reduce injuries,” she states. The ShakeOut serves as a vital reminder that preparedness can save lives and minimize injuries.
As communities prepare for this year’s ShakeOut, experts encourage residents to practice staying put during drills and to familiarize themselves with safety protocols. Understanding the risks associated with moving during an earthquake is crucial for personal safety.
In addition, the California Geological Survey has reported that a significant portion of earthquake-related injuries can be attributed to falling debris and the hurried escape from buildings. With less masonry in California today than in 1933, the risk remains, especially in urban areas with older buildings that have not been retrofitted.
As the ShakeOut drill draws closer, it serves as an urgent call to action for all Californians to reassess their preparedness strategies. Engaging with local communities, schools, and organizations can foster a culture of safety and resilience.
