Urgent Study Reveals Toxic Chemicals in Hair Extensions

UPDATE: A groundbreaking study by the Silent Spring Institute has revealed extensive health risks associated with hair extensions, identifying dangerous chemicals in over 43 popular products. This urgent analysis, published in Environment & Health, highlights the alarming presence of hazardous substances that disproportionately affect Black women, who make up more than 70% of hair extension users.

The study, which is the most comprehensive to date, found that hair extensions—often made from human hair and synthetic fibers—contain over 169 chemicals linked to serious health issues, including cancer and hormone disruption. Lead author Dr. Elissia Franklin emphasizes the need for stronger oversight in an industry that has long overlooked the health of its consumers. “This is an industry that has long overlooked the health of Black women, who should not have to choose between cultural expression, convenience, and their health,” Franklin stated.

The hair extension market is booming, projected to exceed $14 billion globally by 2028, with the United States leading in imports. However, many products are treated with chemicals for durability, including flame retardants and antimicrobial agents, without any requirement for disclosure. These chemicals can release toxins directly onto the scalp and into the air, raising urgent health concerns.

Franklin’s team conducted a detailed analysis using advanced screening techniques, including two-dimensional gas chromatography. They identified substances such as phthalates, pesticides, and organotins—chemicals known for skin irritation and other health risks. “We were especially surprised to find organotins,” Franklin noted, highlighting their potential link to serious health problems.

With increasing awareness about these dangers, legislative efforts are gaining momentum. New York has recently proposed a bill mandating full ingredient disclosure for manufacturers of synthetic hair products, while New Jersey is advancing a measure to ban harmful chemicals altogether. At the federal level, the Safer Beauty Bill Package has been introduced to enhance regulation of synthetic hair products through the Food and Drug Administration.
