West Fargo Fire Marshal Dell Sprecher Honored After 37 Years

Recognized at the recent award banquet, the 65-year-old firefighter is not planning to retire anytime soon, emphasizing his commitment to public safety and community service.

This recognition comes as Sprecher reflects on nearly four decades in a profession where longevity is rare. According to the National Fire Protection Association, only 10% of career firefighters were over the age of 60 in 2022, with the average career span ranging from 25 to 30 years. Sprecher’s career trajectory is especially noteworthy, having transitioned from a volunteer department to a full-time municipal service that now supports a growing population of nearly 40,000 residents in West Fargo.

Sprecher began his journey with the West Fargo Fire Department in 1988, when the team was comprised entirely of volunteers, except for the chief. Over the years, he climbed the ranks, becoming assistant chief in 1993 and eventually serving as fire marshal after the department transitioned to a paid service in 2018. “It needed to be a long time ago,” Sprecher noted about the department’s evolution, highlighting the addition of medical calls and improved response capacity.

Fire Chief Dan Fuller praised Sprecher’s adaptability and extensive knowledge, stating, “Dell has the most institutional knowledge and at the same time has shown his ability to change and adapt to new ideas in the fire service.” His leadership in the West Fargo Risk Reduction Division has introduced innovative programs aimed at reducing emergency calls and enhancing community safety.

Sprecher leads initiatives that include reviewing fire safety systems in new buildings, conducting compliance inspections, and spearheading fire safety education. His programs have reportedly saved hundreds of 911 calls each year, showcasing a proactive approach to public safety.
