Abandoned Nicosia Airport: A Somber Snapshot of History
Haunting images have emerged from the remnants of Nicosia International Airport, which has remained dormant for nearly 50 years. Once a bustling gateway for travelers in Cyprus, the airport now stands as a silent testament to the island’s turbulent history, marked by conflict and division.
History and Decline
Originally established in the 1930s as a Royal Air Force base, the facility transitioned into a civilian airport serving as Cyprus’s primary international hub. The situation changed dramatically in 1974 when a Turkish invasion led to extensive damage during intense fighting. Following a negotiated ceasefire, the airport was designated as a United Nations Protected Area, with its boundaries contributing to the island’s buffer zone.
Commercial operations continued briefly after the conflict. In 1977, engineers from British Airways managed to evacuate three stranded Cyprus Airways aircraft from the runway. Despite these efforts, the airport never fully recovered and has remained largely untouched since the conflict, creating an eerie atmosphere frozen in time.
Inside the terminal, dusty seats continue to line the boarding areas, where passengers once waited for flights. Faded promotional posters on the walls still advertise idyllic vacations, while nature has reclaimed much of the space, with pigeons nesting in the ceiling beams.
Current Status and Future Prospects
The airfield features the stripped frame of a Hawker Siddeley Trident, long since deprived of its engine components. While regular passenger flights ceased decades ago, the site has not been entirely abandoned. It currently serves as the headquarters for the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP), with helicopters still operating from parts of the facility. Access for the general public is severely restricted due to safety concerns and the airport’s derelict condition.
Over the years, there have been discussions about the potential revival of the airport. Initiatives led by the UN in the 1990s explored reopening the facility, but political disagreements ultimately stalled any progress. Aleem Siddique, a spokesperson for UNFICYP, noted, “It is actually frozen in time. Although there were several attempts over the years by the sides to reach an agreement to reopen, restore, and rehabilitate the airport, they were unable to reach an agreement, and gradually the condition of the airport deteriorated. No planes have left or arrived since 1974.”
A digital reconstruction project by the Cyprus Institute now allows virtual visitors to explore the airport. The “NIC Platform” provides an online experience, enabling users to navigate through offices, duty-free shops, and boarding gates captured in haunting detail.
One local resident, who received special permission to access the site, shared his emotional experience. Reflecting on his memories from childhood during the invasion, he stated, “It’s eerie. It’s emotional. It’s frustrating. It’s sad. Believe me, your mind can make you hear the noise of a buzzing airport, passengers and planes and announcements and all. It’s insane. This is a time freeze that should never have occurred.”
Nicosia International Airport remains a poignant reminder of Cyprus’s complex history, encapsulating a moment in time that continues to resonate deeply with those who remember its former glory.
