Adventurer Bob Hall Takes Herry Bear on Global Journey for Kids

A unique initiative at Hertford Vale CofE Primary School in Staxton is turning the world into a classroom, thanks to the adventures of Bob Hall and his travel companion, Herry the teddy bear. Together, they have explored over 30 countries, from the bustling streets of Tokyo to the stunning coastlines of Cape Town. Herry serves as a mascot for the school, helping students learn about different cultures through engaging presentations that showcase the duo’s travels.

During a recent visit to the school, Bob and Herry captivated students with a slideshow of their adventures. Images of Herry riding a camel or posing with a Chinese lantern elicited enthusiastic responses from the children, who eagerly raised their hands to guess the locations of each picture. Bob, who is 81 years old, shared his experiences and explained how Herry has been a constant companion on his journeys.

“My travels have taken me around the world about five times, and Herry-Bear has been with me the entire time,” Bob said. “He’s my boss, friend, and companion.” His extensive travels were initially curtailed when he became a full-time carer for his wife, Mary, who suffered from Alzheimer’s disease until her passing. Bob credits the support he received from Andrew Barber, the headteacher of Hertford Vale, as instrumental in his healing process.

In 2019, while planning a trip to Australia, Bob proposed the idea of sharing his travel experiences with the school’s students. This led to the incorporation of Herry as a way to foster children’s interest in global cultures. Bob believes that through his photographs, the students can visualize the diverse locations he has visited. “Particularly because Herry-Bear is there,” he added.

Among their many adventures, Bob highlighted the memorable safari trips taken in South Africa and Botswana. Tourists often express curiosity about his furry sidekick, with many surprised that someone of his age wishes to share his life story with a teddy bear.

After the presentation, Hertford Vale pupils enthusiastically discussed their dream travel destinations. Eight-year-old Bodhi expressed her desire to visit Korea because of her favorite bands, while ten-year-old Oliver dreams of experiencing the futuristic culture and cuisine of Japan. Six-year-old Hannah was thrilled to learn about Herry-Bear’s adventures and expressed a wish to take him on her next holiday. Five-year-old Chester simply wants to visit America to enjoy the sweet shops.

When asked about his own travel aspirations, Bob remarked, “I don’t believe in a bucket list. I think where I want to go, and when I want to go, is how I feel at a particular time.” His upcoming plans include a trip to South America, culminating in attendance at the Rio de Janeiro Carnival, where Herry-Bear is expected to play a starring role. Before that, Bob has a solo trip to Barbados planned, humorously noting, “I’m not taking the bear – it’s me time.”

This innovative approach to education highlights the importance of personal stories in teaching children about the world, fostering curiosity and a sense of adventure that can inspire the next generation.
