Intel Challenges TSMC’s Claims of Trade Secret Breach
Intel has firmly rejected allegations from Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) that a former executive disclosed trade secrets when he transitioned to the American chipmaker. This development adds complexity to an ongoing case that has already prompted legal action.
According to a statement from Intel, there are stringent measures in place to safeguard sensitive information and intellectual property. The company asserted that there is no evidence to suggest that these protocols were violated when Lo Wei-jen, the former Senior Vice President for corporate strategy development at TSMC, joined Intel in October 2023.
TSMC contends that Lo divulged critical information regarding its innovative 2nm production process. The company has described its upcoming technology as “the most advanced in the semiconductor industry,” promising significant improvements in both density and energy efficiency upon its release. TSMC’s 2nm process will incorporate first-generation nanosheet transistor technology, which is expected to enhance performance and reduce power consumption.
Lo retired from his position at TSMC in July 2023 before taking up the role at Intel, which has now come under scrutiny. Intel emphasized that the movement of skilled personnel is a typical practice within the semiconductor sector, adding that nothing indicates TSMC’s claims hold any merit.
In response to the allegations, TSMC is reportedly pursuing legal action against Lo and has initiated an investigation led by Taiwanese prosecutors. The protection of its 2nm process has become increasingly critical for TSMC. Reports from August 2023 indicated that the company dismissed employees for attempting to access confidential information related to this technology.
Intel’s rebuttal of TSMC’s claims highlights the competitive tension between these industry giants, as both companies vie for leadership in the ever-evolving landscape of semiconductor manufacturing. As the situation unfolds, the implications for both Intel and TSMC will likely resonate throughout the industry.
