Intuitive Machines to Acquire Lanteris for $800 Million
Intuitive Machines, a leader in lunar infrastructure, has announced its intention to acquire Lanteris Space Systems, formerly known as Maxar Space Systems, from private equity firm Advent International for $800 million. This strategic acquisition aims to broaden Intuitive Machines’ focus beyond lunar exploration to include the satellite manufacturing sector, which encompasses defense applications.
In a statement released by CEO Steve Altemus, the acquisition signifies a pivotal shift for Intuitive Machines. He stated, “This marks the moment Intuitive Machines transitions from a lunar company to a multi-domain space prime, setting the pace for how the industry’s next generation will operate.” Until now, the firm has primarily concentrated on collaborations with NASA and commercial lunar exploration initiatives, with limited involvement in the military space market.
The expansion into satellite manufacturing aligns with current trends in space technology. In 2023, Intuitive Machines was awarded $9.5 million by the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) under the Joint Emergent Technology Supplying On-orbit Nuclear Power (JETSON) program. This initiative is focused on advancing technologies for nuclear fission reactors deployed on satellites, aimed at powering subsystems for extended missions beyond Earth orbit.
Strategic Plans and Future Outlook
On October 22, 2023, Intuitive Machines secured an additional contract from AFRL worth $8.2 million, further solidifying its position in the military sector. The company is set to leverage Lanteris’s expertise in satellite systems, which has seen significant activity, including collaborations to build missile tracking satellites under a contract with the Space Development Agency.
Lanteris, based in Palo Alto, California, specializes in the manufacturing and operation of satellite systems. Following its rebranding from Maxar on October 1, 2023, the company emphasized its commitment to national security and defense technology as a key priority. Its widely utilized Maxar-1300 series of commercial communications satellites are instrumental in operations conducted in geosynchronous Earth orbit.
The acquisition process is expected to conclude in the first quarter of 2026, pending customary regulatory approvals and closing conditions. This move not only enhances Intuitive Machines’ portfolio but also positions the company as a formidable player in the evolving landscape of space technology, bridging the gap between lunar exploration and terrestrial applications.
As the space industry continues to grow, the integration of Lanteris into Intuitive Machines marks a significant moment, indicating a shift towards more diversified operations that could redefine how companies engage with both commercial and military sectors.
