Israel Demolishes Homes in West Bank as Settlement Expansion Accelerates

Israeli forces have commenced the demolition of numerous buildings housing Palestinian families in the northern occupied West Bank, resulting in significant displacement as the winter season approaches. On Wednesday, military bulldozers and cranes targeted residential blocks in the Nur Shams refugee camp, dismantling homes that sheltered around 100 families. “This is deeply painful,” said Mutaz Mahr, a resident whose home was destroyed. He reflected on the emotional toll of being forced from his neighborhood, emphasizing the significance of family and memories tied to their homes. “Our home is dear to us, the memories are dear to us,” he remarked, highlighting the historical context as he faced displacement for the second time in his family’s lineage.

The Israeli military has stated that these demolitions are part of a broader operation targeting Palestinian resistance groups, a claim that has yet to be independently verified. Meanwhile, Palestinian residents and various rights organizations argue that the demolitions constitute collective punishment and forced displacement under occupation. Nihaya al-Jendi, a member of the Nur Shams popular committee, noted that the crisis had already reached alarming levels prior to these latest demolitions. “More than 1,500 families from the camp are still unable to return,” she stated, describing the situation as a humanitarian disaster unfolding before the world.

Settlement Expansion Amid Destruction

As the destruction of refugee homes continues, Israel is advancing its plans for illegal settlement expansion. On the same day, Israeli authorities approved plans for 126 settler housing units in the Sa-Nur outpost, as reported by Israeli media. The High Planning Council, part of Israel’s Civil Administration, has greenlit a plan that allows illegal settlers to return to Sa-Nur, which had been evacuated in 2005 under then-Prime Minister Ariel Sharon‘s disengagement plan.

This decision reverses a policy enacted in March 2024, when Israel’s parliament repealed the disengagement law through legislation known as the “Cancellation of the Disengagement Law.” Channel 7 reported that this new plan could be implemented within two months, further complicating an already tense situation in the region.

International Responses and Humanitarian Concerns

The demolitions and settlement approvals coincide with escalating pressures from Israel on the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA). Antonio Guterres, the UN Secretary-General, condemned an Israeli initiative to cut electricity and water supplies to UNRWA facilities, a move that would severely hinder the agency’s operations, according to his spokesperson.

“UNRWA is an integral part of the UN system,” emphasized UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric, highlighting the agency’s critical role in providing education, healthcare, and humanitarian aid to millions of Palestinians across various regions, including Gaza, the West Bank, Jordan, Lebanon, and Syria. Philippe Lazzarini, the UNRWA Commissioner-General, criticized the Israeli actions as part of a systematic effort to discredit the agency and obstruct its vital work.

In 2024, Israeli legislation further restricted UNRWA’s operations within the country, barring officials from engaging with the agency.
