MS-13 Member Receives 1,335-Year Sentence for Numerous Crimes

A member of the notorious MS-13 gang, identified as Marvin Abel Hernandez Palacios, has been sentenced to an extraordinary 1,335 years in prison. His conviction, announced on December 18, 2023, encompasses a wide range of serious offenses, including murder, trafficking, extortion, and kidnapping, according to the Attorney General’s Office of El Salvador.

Palacios was found guilty of multiple charges, including “aggravated homicide, aggravated femicide, disappearance of persons, extortion, and involvement with illicit groups.” This landmark ruling is part of a broader crackdown on gang violence in El Salvador, a country grappling with high crime rates. On the same day, authorities sentenced a total of 248 MS-13 members, with prison terms ranging from 463 to 958 years.

The Attorney General’s Office stated that the gang’s activities have resulted in significant human suffering, impacting a total of 169 victims. Among the high-profile cases linked to these crimes are the disappearance and murder of siblings Karen and Eduardo Guerrero Toledo in December 2021, as well as the femicide of soccer player Claudia Jimena Granados in October 2021. The gang’s violence extends to university students, with cases of disappearances and murders reported as recent as April 2020.

In addition to violent crimes, the gang has been involved in extensive extortion schemes targeting local businesses. The Attorney General’s Office revealed that many victims were forced to close their establishments due to constant threats. The total counts against the 248 gang members include 43 counts of aggravated homicide, 42 counts of enforced disappearance, and 86 counts of extortion, among other serious charges.

El Salvador has struggled with gang violence for decades, with MS-13 and its rival, Barrio 18, previously controlling approximately 80% of the country’s territory. The nation has one of the highest murder rates in the world, with these gangs responsible for around 200,000 deaths over the past thirty years.

In response to the escalating violence, the government initiated a crackdown on crime in 2022. Earlier this year, former US President Donald Trump categorized MS-13 as a terrorist organization, labeling it “the meanest, worst gang in the world.” He emphasized the brutality of the gang’s actions, describing its members as “sick and deranged.”

As El Salvador continues to confront the challenges posed by gang violence, the recent convictions may signal a determined effort by authorities to restore safety and order in the region.
