A recent poll reveals that close to 9% of New York City residents are considering leaving if Zohran Mamdani, the Democratic socialist candidate, secures victory in the upcoming mayoral race. Conducted by J.L. Partners for the Daily Mail, the survey indicates that approximately 765,000 people, from a total city population of 8.5 million, would “definitely” make plans to exit the city.

The poll further highlights that an estimated 2.12 million residents, or about 25% of the population, would contemplate leaving if Mamdani wins. His proposed policies, which include free child care, a rent freeze, and free public transport, aim to address affordability issues within the city.

As the election date nears, Mamdani appears to be gaining traction against his opponents, including Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa and former Democratic Governor Andrew Cuomo, who is running as an independent. Early voting has seen significant participation, with hundreds of thousands casting their ballots in favor of Mamdani, bolstered by a recent rally featuring prominent supporters such as Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Sen. Bernie Sanders.

Mamdani has also received endorsements from influential figures, including Kathy Hochul, the Democratic Governor of New York. Additionally, reports indicate that former President Barack Obama praised Mamdani’s campaign during a private conversation, stating, “Your campaign has been impressive to watch.” While Obama did not formally endorse him, the acknowledgment adds weight to Mamdani’s candidacy.

In contrast, former President Donald Trump has voiced strong opposition to Mamdani’s potential leadership. In an interview with “60 Minutes,” Trump characterized Mamdani as a “communist” and suggested that federal funding for New York might be jeopardized if he is elected. “It’s going to be hard for me as the president to give a lot of money to New York. Because if you have a communist running New York, all you’re doing is wasting the money you’re sending there,” Trump said.

As the election approaches, the stakes are high for both candidates and the residents of New York City. With Mamdani’s progressive platform and growing support, the outcome of the race could have significant implications not only for the city’s governance but also for its demographic landscape.
