UPS Flight 2976 Crash Claims 15th Victim on Christmas Day
Tragedy struck again on Christmas Day as the crash of UPS Flight 2976 claimed its 15th victim. Alain Rodriguez Colina succumbed to injuries sustained during the incident that occurred on November 4, 2025. Colina had been in a medically induced coma for seven weeks following the disaster, which devastated the area around his workplace near Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport.
Colina, a Cuban immigrant and metal buyer at Grade A Auto Parts & Recycling, was attending to a customer when the McDonnell Douglas MD-11F crashed into the scrapyard, destroying it and the surrounding environment. The impact also took the lives of 12 people on the ground, including Colina’s coworker. Although Colina managed to escape the wreckage, he suffered severe burns covering more than 50% of his body. Doctors initially gave him a slim chance of survival, but his condition appeared to improve before taking a sudden turn for the worse on December 25.
Details of the Crash
UPS Flight 2976 was a scheduled cargo flight from Louisville to Honolulu. On the day of the crash, the aircraft, registered as N259UP, took off from Runway 17R at approximately 17:13 local time. Shortly after reaching V1, the aircraft’s number one engine detached from the wing, igniting a fire that spread quickly.
The loss of control led to the aircraft banking sharply to the left before it descended and struck a UPS Supply Chain warehouse and a line of fuel tanks. The situation mirrored the catastrophic events of American Airlines Flight 191 in 1979, where a similar sequence of failures led to a devastating crash. The left main landing gear impacted the warehouse, while the left wing collided with the fuel tanks, exacerbating the fire.
In total, 12 people on the ground lost their lives, and 22 others were injured. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has initiated an investigation to determine the specific causes of the crash. Preliminary assessments suggest that a potential failure of the number two engine may have contributed to the loss of control of the aircraft.
Ongoing Investigation and Safety Concerns
The NTSB’s inquiry is ongoing, and findings will be essential in understanding the full scope of the tragedy. This incident raises questions about the maintenance and operational standards for older aircraft models like the McDonnell Douglas MD-11F, which has been in service since its delivery to Thai Airways in 1991. The aircraft was converted to a freighter in 2006 and had been operating for UPS since then.
In the wake of the UPS Flight 2976 crash, safety advocates are emphasizing the need for stringent oversight of aging fleets. The parallels drawn between this incident and the American Airlines Flight 191 disaster highlight the potential risks associated with older aircraft and the importance of regular maintenance checks.
As the investigation continues, the families affected by this tragedy, including that of Alain Rodriguez Colina, await answers and justice for their loved ones. The impact of the crash not only devastated the local community but also serves as a somber reminder of the inherent risks of air cargo operations.
