Fire Kills 40 and Injures Over 100 at Swiss New Year’s Celebration
A tragic fire at a New Year’s celebration in Crans-Montana, Switzerland, has claimed the lives of approximately 40 people and injured around 115 others. The incident occurred at the Le Constellation bar early on January 1, 2026, around 01:30 local time, according to the Valais Cantonal Police.
Witnesses reported that the fire began when bottles fitted with sparklers were carried too close to the ceiling. One witness described a scene where waitresses were serving champagne bottles adorned with sparklers, leading to the ignition of the ceiling. “Once the ceiling was on fire, within about ten seconds the entire nightclub was ablaze,” the witness recounted. Survivors fled the bar, with many reportedly breaking windows to escape the flames.
Emergency response teams swiftly mobilized, deploying 13 helicopters and 42 ambulances to the scene. Valais canton State Council President Mathais Reynard provided updates, stating that many of the injured are in critical condition. The devastation has drawn attention not only locally but across borders, as many victims were likely from other countries.
Investigation Underway, Terrorism Ruled Out
Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the fire. Beatrice Pilloud, the local prosecutor, confirmed that terrorism is not being considered as a factor in this tragedy. “At this stage, we are treating this as a fire and there is no question of any kind of (terror) attack,” Pilloud stated.
The Italian Foreign Ministry has acknowledged reports from Swiss police regarding the deaths, although exact figures remain unconfirmed. As the investigation continues, officials are working to identify the victims and provide support to their families.
Impact on Crans-Montana and Future Events
Crans-Montana, a popular ski resort town in the Valais region, is known for attracting tourists, especially during the winter season. The resort is set to host World Cup ski races starting on January 30, leading up to the Milan-Cortina Olympics. The community is now grappling with the aftermath of this devastating event while preparing for upcoming international competitions.
As the situation develops, local authorities remain focused on supporting those affected and ensuring that safety measures are rigorously reviewed to prevent future incidents. The tragedy has left a profound impact on the community and those who celebrate the New Year in Crans-Montana.
