Donald Dicklich Passes Away After Battle with Cancer at 75
BREAKING: Donald Dicklich, a respected figure in Minnesota’s public and healthcare sectors, died on October 27, 2025, at the age of 75 after a prolonged struggle with esophageal cancer. His passing marks the end of an impactful life dedicated to community service and family.
Born to Bogdan “Bob” and Mildred Dicklich, Donald grew up in Hibbing, Minnesota, where he graduated from Hibbing Schools in 1971. Notably, he was a proud member of the 1970 3rd place State Championship Hockey Team, an experience that shaped his teamwork and leadership skills.
After earning a Bachelor of Science in Business from the University of Minnesota, Donald continued his education by obtaining an MBA. He married Mary Zanoni in June 1975, becoming a devoted father to two daughters, Gina Marie and Dawn Michele.
Donald began his career at U.S. Steel Corp., where he held various positions, including at the Mintac Mine and Plant and in the USS Great Lakes Fleet. He dedicated 14 years to healthcare administration at what is now known as Essentia Health, before taking on the role of Administrative Manager/CFO at the Iron Range Resources and Rehabilitation Board, a vital economic development agency for Minnesota.
In a significant achievement, Donald was appointed as the St. Louis County Auditor-Treasurer by the County Board and went on to be elected to three terms, serving nearly 15 years until his retirement in January 2019. His commitment to public service resonated throughout the community, making a lasting impact on local governance.
His contributions extended beyond his professional life; Donald was actively involved in his church, serving on various boards, as President of the Men’s Club, and was a cherished member of the choir for many years.
Donald is survived by his daughters, Gina Lund and Dawn Verdone, along with his siblings, Ron (Samantha) Dicklich, Diana (Paul) Broste, and Cherilyn McEnery (Friend Scott). He leaves behind five nieces, a nephew, eight grandnieces and grandnephews, and one granddaughter, Kennady Lund, who was the “apple of his eye.”
As the community mourns his passing, tributes are pouring in, reflecting on his legacy of leadership, dedication, and family values. Memorial services are being planned to honor Donald’s life and contributions.
