Satellite Images Reveal Mesovortices in Hurricane Melissa’s Fury
Hurricane Melissa, one of the most powerful storms in recorded history, has left a trail of destruction across the Caribbean. Satellite images taken on October 28, 2023, captured the hurricane’s intense rotation and the formation of “mesovortices” around its eye. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), these small-scale rotational features emerge due to significant differences in wind speed and direction.
On October 28, Hurricane Melissa made landfall in Jamaica as a Category 5 storm, with maximum sustained winds reaching 185 miles per hour (approximately 295 kilometers per hour). Desmond McKenzie, deputy chair of Jamaica’s disaster risk management council, stated that while he could not confirm the total number of casualties, local authorities reported at least four deaths in southwest Jamaica. The storm has caused widespread power outages, affecting roughly 72% of the island’s population, with around 65% of mobile phone sites rendered inoperable.
As the storm continued its path, it brought devastating flooding to Haiti, resulting in at least 25 fatalities and leaving 18 individuals missing. The situation remains dire, with emergency responders working tirelessly to assist affected communities.
Cuba, where Hurricane Melissa made landfall as a Category 3 storm on October 29, reported no fatalities; however, many areas were left without electricity, Internet, or telephone service due to downed power lines and transformers. The storm’s impact was felt across the region, highlighting the vulnerabilities of coastal communities to extreme weather events.
By October 30, 2023, Hurricane Melissa was downgraded to a Category 2 storm with sustained winds nearing 105 miles per hour (approximately 169 kilometers per hour515 miles (roughly 830 kilometers) southwest of Bermuda, which remains under a hurricane warning as the storm continues to evolve.
The severe impact of Hurricane Melissa underscores ongoing concerns regarding climate change and its role in intensifying extreme weather events. As the storm progresses, authorities remain vigilant, monitoring its path and providing updates to the public on safety measures and potential evacuations.
