Mirate Set to Open New Location in Los Angeles Arts District
Mirate, a celebrated Mexican restaurant and bar originally from Los Feliz, is expanding its footprint with a new location in the Arts District of Los Angeles. The restaurant will be situated at 530 S. Mateo Street, occupying a ground-floor space in a 35-story mixed-use building that is currently under construction. This expansion, detailed in recently approved documents from the Los Angeles City Planning Department, promises to bring a fresh culinary experience to the area.
The new Mirate will offer a full range of alcoholic beverages for on-site consumption and will operate daily from 6:00 a.m. to 12:00 a.m.. The location will feature a spacious 4,936-square-foot dining area with 182 indoor seats and a 745-square-foot patio accommodating an additional 40 outdoor seats. This design aims to create a vibrant atmosphere that reflects the unique character of the Arts District.
Support for the project has come from both the Arts District Neighborhood Council and the Los Angeles River Artists and Business Association (LARABA). They endorsed the opening with specific conditions, including limited patio hours and restrictions on amplified outdoor music. During a public hearing, Matt Egan, co-owner of Mirate, assured attendees that the new establishment would mirror the fine dining sensibility of its original location while enhancing the evolving culinary landscape of the Downtown Arts District.
Mirate first opened its doors in Los Feliz at 1712 N. Vermont Avenue, where it quickly garnered attention for its modern interpretation of Mexican cuisine and an extensive cocktail and spirits program focused exclusively on Mexican producers. The restaurant has been recognized as one of the 50 Best Bars in Los Angeles and features a menu designed in collaboration with renowned chef David Castro of La Morocha in Ensenada, Mexico.
The upcoming Arts District location will offer an ingredient-driven menu that emphasizes Mexican flavors with a California twist. Dishes will be crafted for sharing and will include reimagined versions of classic favorites, such as shrimp and fish ceviche, short rib fried tacos, lamb skewers, and rockfish with adobo. A delightful assortment of desserts will also be available, featuring options like chocolate semifreddo and corn cake with banana ice cream.
Mirate’s beverage program will continue to highlight cocktails, wines, and beers sourced exclusively from Mexico. This commitment aligns with the restaurant’s mission to showcase the rich diversity and craftsmanship inherent in Mexican culinary traditions. As Mirate prepares to open its new location, it aims to become an integral part of the Arts District community, contributing to the area’s vibrant cultural and culinary tapestry.
