Arkansas Lawmakers Pay Tribute to Former Vice President Dick Cheney
Former U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney passed away on March 4, 2024, at the age of 84 due to complications from pneumonia and cardiac and vascular disease. His family issued a statement revealing that he was surrounded by his beloved wife, Lynne Cheney, their daughters, Liz and Mary, and other family members at the time of his death.
In the wake of his passing, numerous lawmakers from Arkansas took to social media to express their condolences and share memories of the former vice president. Bill Clinton, the 42nd President of the United States, reflected on Cheney’s long career in public service through a post on X. He stated, “Throughout his long career in public service, Dick Cheney was guided by a deep belief that he was doing what was right for America. Though we often disagreed, I always respected his dedication to our country and his unwavering sense of duty. My thoughts are with Lynne and the Cheney family.”
Senator John Boozman also honored Cheney’s legacy with a heartfelt message. He wrote, “Vice President Dick Cheney devoted his life to public service and national security, including fiercely championing America’s leadership abroad. He also loved his family dearly and leaves behind a legacy they and our country will long remember. Cathy and I send our sincere condolences to his loved ones and honor his many contributions to our nation.”
Representative Steve Womack shared personal memories of Cheney, recalling their first meeting during Womack’s deployment to Sinai, Egypt, in 2002. Womack expressed, “My prayers are with the Cheney family following the passing of former Vice President Cheney. Dick Cheney was a dedicated public servant and committed to the safety and security of his fellow Americans. I had the opportunity to reconnect with him years later fishing for cutthroat trout on the Snake River.”
Senator Tom Cotton emphasized Cheney’s commitment to national service in his tribute. He stated, “Dick Cheney dedicated his life to the service of our nation and the people of Wyoming. He was a constant champion for a dominant military, strong and confident American leadership, free markets, and individual liberty. I extend my condolences to his family and friends.”
Other Arkansas officials, including Representatives Bruce Westerman and Rick Crawford, also expressed their condolences. Westerman noted, “My condolences are with the family of former Vice President Dick Cheney as they mourn the loss of a husband, father, and grandfather.” Crawford added, “Today, we remember and honor Vice President Cheney’s many years of dedicated service to our nation. I offer his family my deepest condolences. May he rest in peace.”
