Duke Faces Texas in Dick Vitale Invitational on Nov. 4, 2025
The No. 6 Duke Blue Devils will take on the Texas Longhorns in the inaugural Dick Vitale Invitational on November 4, 2025. The highly anticipated matchup will take place at the Spectrum Center in Charlotte, North Carolina, showcasing two prominent college basketball programs. This event is a tribute to Dick Vitale, the legendary basketball commentator, who will be calling the game after a significant health battle.
At 86 years old, Vitale has bravely fought through multiple cancer diagnoses, including melanoma and lymphoma, and has undergone intense treatment regimens. His resilience has not only inspired fans but has also drawn attention to the ongoing fight against pediatric cancer, a cause he passionately supports through the V Foundation. “I’m 86 years old. And to be going on TV and go on after four cancer battles, I’m pinching myself,” Vitale stated in an interview with The Associated Press.
The Dick Vitale Invitational was announced by ESPN Events in June, recognizing Vitale’s extensive contributions to college basketball since the network’s inception in 1979. His enthusiastic catchphrases and vibrant commentary have made him a beloved figure in sports broadcasting. “His passion for college basketball, his knowledge, he made the game better,” said Texas coach Sean Miller, reflecting on Vitale’s influence on the sport.
Vitale’s journey back to the courtside has been marked by profound challenges. Following surgeries and treatments, he has had to adjust his broadcasting schedule to conserve his voice. “I used to say yes to everybody,” he explained, noting that he now selectively chooses his engagements to minimize strain on his vocal cords. His focus remains on his commitment to raising funds for pediatric cancer research, with over $105 million raised through the V Foundation’s annual gala in his name over the past 20 years.
In preparation for the game, Vitale plans to reduce his talking on game days and work in three-person broadcasting teams to lessen the demand on his voice. “It really moved me to tears,” he said of the event’s launch, demonstrating his emotional connection to this tribute. Vitale will be joined by fellow ESPN analyst Jay Bilas, who praised Vitale for his transparency during his health struggles, emphasizing the support he received from friends and colleagues throughout his journey.
As fans eagerly await the matchup, the spotlight will be on both teams and the man who has dedicated nearly five decades to the sport. The game not only promises to be an exciting showdown but also serves as a celebration of Vitale’s enduring legacy in college basketball.
