The Denver Broncos are grappling with ongoing issues in their special teams, prompting special teams coordinator Darren Rizzi to accept full responsibility for the recent errors affecting the team’s performance. Following two weeks of disappointing play and frustration voiced by head coach Sean Payton, Rizzi acknowledged the need for improvement.

“We cannot be the reason that we’re losing field position and things like that,” Rizzi stated during a press conference on Thursday. “But listen, it starts with me. Always starts with me as a coordinator, and trickles down to the players. So, I certainly take full responsibility on getting it cleaned up.”

Since joining the Broncos from the New Orleans Saints earlier this year, Rizzi’s special teams have faced significant scrutiny. The situation reached a tipping point in the last two games, highlighted by a communication breakdown that led to a concussion for All-Pro returner Marvin Mims Jr.. Additionally, several players were late in executing their roles during special teams units in the recent match against the Houston Texans.

Rizzi explained that a surge of injuries complicated player substitutions against Houston. He expressed frustration over Denico Autry blocking a field goal during the first quarter, particularly after the team had focused on protection during practice. Despite the challenges, Rizzi commended the offensive line’s efforts during the game-winning field goal by kicker Lutz.

“I’ve always prided myself on being an organized, disciplined guy,” Rizzi noted. “Those are things we gotta get cleaned up. And we will. We’ll get that done this week.”

Changes are on the horizon for the Broncos as they prepare to face the Las Vegas Raiders on Thursday night. The team waived safety J.T. Gray with an injury designation after he reported a hamstring issue following the recent game. Gray, a second-team All-Pro from 2024, had been acquired from the Ravens’ practice squad but did not see action in his first two games with the Broncos.

On a more positive note, Mims returned to practice this week after being sidelined with a concussion. The Broncos reported an improved health status, with cornerback Riley Moss and safety Brandon Jones also participating in limited drills. Pat Surtain II was seen doing rehabilitation work on the sidelines, indicating progress for the defensive unit.

As the team gears up for their next match, Rizzi reflected on the relationship between Lutz and Payton, which he described as “very unique.” He noted that Lutz has played under Payton for eight seasons, dating back to their time together in New Orleans. During Lutz’s game-winning kick against the Texans, Payton was seen encouraging him with gestures from the sidelines.

“I think he knows Sean’s going to probably say something on the way out,” Rizzi joked. “He probably says more than just that at other times.”

The Broncos will look to turn their special teams performance around as they prepare to face the Raiders, hoping for a more cohesive effort on the field.
