Ellsworth Elects New City Councilors Amid Tax Concerns
UPDATE: In a closely watched City Council election, Ellsworth voters have just elected three new councilors amid mounting concerns over rising property taxes and development pressures. The election results, finalized on November 7, 2023, show a tight race where the top five candidates were separated by just 76 votes, underscoring the urgency of the issues at stake.
Patrick Shea emerged as the front-runner, securing 1,283 votes. He was followed closely by Carol Patterson-Martineau with 1,231 votes and Marrina Smith at 1,229 votes. Fourth-place candidate John Linnehan missed a council seat by a mere two votes, finishing with 1,227 votes. Marichal trailed Linnehan with 1,207 votes, while Earl Awalt received 1,101 votes and Timothy Carter rounded out the field with 766 votes.
This election marks a significant shift as none of the newly elected councilors have previously held public office. The three outgoing council members — Michelle Beal, Tammy Mote, and Jon Stein — chose not to seek re-election, leaving a vacuum that these new candidates have filled.
Voter sentiment was heavily influenced by concerns over escalating property taxes. Candidates expressed a strong desire for more affordable housing options in Ellsworth, arguing that such measures could help distribute the city’s tax burden more equitably. This election has highlighted a divide among candidates: some advocated for a business-friendly environment with fewer restrictions, while others pushed for a “smart growth” strategy that aligns with Ellsworth’s comprehensive plan, which emphasizes preserving green spaces and enhancing walkability.
Lininehan, a familiar face in local politics, has consistently campaigned for City Council and has previously run for state office. He brings a conservative perspective, advocating for pro-business policies while facing scrutiny over his past business practices and social viewpoints.
Campaigns from candidates like Linnehan, Awalt, and Shea focused on fiscal responsibility and budget concerns, resonating with voters worried about the city’s financial future. Conversely, Carter took a different stance, emphasizing the need for regulation within the local vacation rental market to safeguard affordable housing for residents.
On the progressive side, Marichal, Patterson-Martineau, and Smith aimed to balance concerns about property taxes with the necessity of adequate funding for infrastructure and existing city programs. Their messages have sparked discussions about how best to address Ellsworth’s growing challenges while enhancing community well-being.
What’s Next: The newly elected councilors will face immediate challenges as they step into their roles. With property tax concerns looming large, residents will be looking for decisive action and effective leadership in the coming months. The council’s approach to growth, housing, and fiscal policy will be closely scrutinized as they navigate the complex landscape of local governance.
