Veteran David Grissom Honored for Distinguished Military Service
In a ceremony celebrating exceptional military service, David William Grissom was inducted into the Cullman Veterans Hall of Fame on November 5, 2025. Grissom, a former Specialist (E-5) in the United States Army, is recognized for his remarkable contributions during the Vietnam War and his continued advocacy for veterans.
Early Service and Valor in Vietnam
Grissom’s military journey began on February 14, 1968, when he was drafted into the Army. After basic training at Fort Benning, Georgia, he was designated as a Radio Operator and Communication Technician. However, upon arriving in Vietnam in July 1968, his role quickly changed to that of an Infantry Ranger, showcasing his ability to adapt under pressure.
His combat experience commenced during the Battle of Loc Ninh, where he faced intense enemy fire on his first day in the field. This battle, notable for the loss of World War II Medal of Honor recipient General Keith Ware, marked the beginning of Grissom’s extensive contributions to his unit, Charlie Company, 1st Battalion, 16th Infantry Rangers.
Over the course of his tour, Grissom completed 74 combat insertions and received commendations, including the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart. His dedication was further evident during the Mekong Delta campaign, where he collaborated with Navy Riverine forces and earned the Combat Infantryman Badge.
Grissom’s resilience was tested when he sustained injuries from a mortar blast in the Plain of Reeds. Following his recovery, he was reassigned to the 9th Military Intelligence Division, where he conducted surveillance operations along the Cambodian border.
Post-Military Life and Community Engagement
Upon completing his service at Fort Hood, Texas, Grissom returned to Cullman, Alabama, where he initially worked at the Bendix Westinghouse factory. In 1971, seeking to make a more significant impact, he joined the State of Alabama Narcotics Investigation team as an undercover investigator. His law enforcement career continued with the Morgan County Sheriff’s Department and the Decatur Police Department, where he was recognized as Alabama’s Young Law Enforcement Officer of the Year in 1974.
Grissom remains a staunch advocate for veterans. As a Life Member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), Disabled American Veterans (DAV), and the American Legion, he actively assists fellow veterans in securing benefits and provides transportation to medical appointments. His advocacy efforts include engaging with Congressman Robert Aderholt and other officials to address veterans’ needs.
His community involvement extends beyond veteran advocacy. Grissom has been a long-time member of the Cullman County Republican Party and supports various local initiatives, including the Cullman County Bosom Buddies Foundation. He frequently speaks at local schools, sharing his experiences and honoring fellow veterans.
In 1979, Grissom transitioned from law enforcement to entrepreneurship, founding Wholesale Jewelers International. He expanded the business from a single location in Cullman to multiple stores across Alabama. After retiring from the jewelry sector in 2004, he launched Grissom Sales, focusing on tractors, trailers, and farm equipment. Today, he operates Diamond Plaza Rental Properties in Cullman.
David Grissom’s life reflects a profound commitment to service, integrity, and community leadership. Whether on the battlefield, in law enforcement, or through civic engagement, he has consistently demonstrated valor and dedication to others. His personal interests, including hunting and spending time with family, complement a life dedicated to service for both country and community.
