Amtrak’s Mardi Gras Rail Service Revives New Orleans Day Trips
Amtrak’s Mardi Gras Rail Service has successfully resumed operations, providing a convenient way for travelers to visit New Orleans. The service, which restarted on August 18, 2023, after nearly two decades, has become a popular choice for day trips, as demonstrated by a recent journey taken by local residents.
On a brisk morning, FOX 10 reporter Lee Peck embarked on the journey to New Orleans, joined by his neighbors, Marty and Chris Henken. The train departed from the downtown Mobile depot at 06:30, setting the stage for a day filled with exploration and enjoyment. Passengers were eager to enjoy the amenities, including a visit to the café car shortly after departure.
Among the travelers was Nancy Clark, a FOX 10 viewer from Mobile, who expressed her excitement about the trip. “I’ve always wanted to ride on a train. And it’s a bucket list! We’re going to the Riverwalk and we’re going to the French Market and then to find somewhere good to eat,” she shared, highlighting the appeal of this rail service.
The train made several scheduled stops in Mississippi, and by the time it approached New Orleans, every seat was occupied. The iconic New Orleans Superdome signaled their arrival shortly after 10:00, and the group wasted no time in immersing themselves in the local culture. Their first stop was the Streetcar Café for lunch, followed by a visit to the historic Hotel Monteleone, where festive decorations for the upcoming Christmas season were being prepared.
At the Carousel Bar within the hotel, the atmosphere was lively. Another couple, Mellissa and Jay Fraiser, who celebrated their eighth wedding anniversary on the trip, joined in on the fun after boarding in Pascagoula. “I wasn’t sure what to expect. Honestly, I was worried about the comfort of the whole thing. I was impressed by the seating. Way more comfortable than a plane,” Mellissa remarked, sharing her positive experience with the train journey.
The ease of travel has made Amtrak’s service a preferred option for many. “I’ll never drive again. Hope on the Amtrak. You can either do a day trip or stay for the night. We leave tomorrow at 17:00, so we have all day tomorrow as well,” she added, emphasizing the convenience of the service for both short and extended visits.
The day trip also included a stop at the picturesque Jackson Square, where the weather was ideal for sightseeing. Many passengers, including Marty and Nancy, expressed their satisfaction with the experience. “Now that they’re back, I know for sure that we’ll take it again. It’s been fun. It’s been a lot of fun,” Marty declared, while Nancy reflected on her previous visits to New Orleans, stating, “This was not my first time to come to New Orleans — this was all about the train and this has been great.”
Amtrak’s Mardi Gras Rail Service not only facilitates travel to a culturally rich destination but also fosters connections among travelers, enhancing the overall experience. With the service proving popular among locals and visitors alike, it appears poised to become a staple for those seeking easy access to New Orleans and its vibrant offerings.
