Miami Dolphins Hold Off Trade Frenzy, Zach Sieler Remains
The Miami Dolphins opted not to make any trades during the NFL trade deadline, despite receiving multiple offers. Late on Wednesday, reports indicated that defensive tackle Zach Sieler was among the players discussed in trade talks. NFL insider Jordan Schultz stated that the Dolphins received inquiries about Sieler but were unwilling to consider any deal unless it involved a high Day 2 draft pick.
Sieler, along with wide receiver Jaylen Waddle and linebacker Bradley Chubb, was mentioned in discussions, indicating a potential shift within the franchise. The Dolphins had already traded linebacker Jaelan Phillips to the Philadelphia Eagles for a fourth-round pick, but no additional trades materialized. This lack of action comes as the team grapples with a disappointing 2-7 record and a recent change in leadership following the departure of their general manager.
The interest in Sieler is notable, especially considering his performance since joining the Dolphins after being claimed off waivers from the Baltimore Ravens. He has established himself as a reliable player, despite this season being less than stellar. The Dolphins are in need of strong contributors as they navigate a rebuilding phase, which includes integrating three rookie draft picks into their defensive line.
Sieler’s recent contract extension adds another layer of complexity to the trade discussions. In training camp, the Dolphins awarded him a deal that included a substantial signing bonus of $25 million. Trading a player shortly after such a significant financial commitment is uncommon, and it would have left the Dolphins with dead money on the salary cap for years.
Head coach Mike McDaniel addressed the trade deadline decisions, explaining that the group involved in discussions included interim general manager Champ Kelly and owner Stephen Ross. While McDaniel refrained from discussing specific players, he acknowledged the challenges of making impactful trades. “All deals are not close to me until they’re done,” he stated. “There wasn’t anything that moved the needle for us to change our roster beyond what we’ve done.”
As the Dolphins look to regroup, they will need to focus on their upcoming challenges, particularly their next matchup against the Buffalo Bills. The franchise’s direction appears uncertain, but the commitment to retaining key players like Sieler may indicate a desire to build around existing talent as they aim for a turnaround.
With the trade deadline behind them, the Dolphins have signaled their intent to hold onto players who can contribute in the long term, even as they face the realities of a struggling season. As discussions of further trades linger, the franchise must prioritize development and strategic planning for the future.
