Jingle Bell Beach Run Kicks Off Holiday Season in Kailua-Kona
The streets of Kailua-Kona will come alive this Sunday as the 17th Annual Jingle Bell Beach Run takes place, transforming Alii Drive into a festive route for participants. This year’s event features a Christmas-themed 3.1-mile run/walk that begins and ends at the Coconut Grove Marketplace.
The race, which is set to start at 7:30 a.m., invites runners and walkers of all ages to enjoy a blend of competition and holiday spirit. Participants will take in scenic views of Kailua Bay and the Historic Kailua Village as they traverse the course, which includes a U-turn near the Kailua Pier before heading back towards the finish line.
In addition to the main event, the Jingle Bell Beach Run will also host the Santa’s Keiki Dash, which begins at 8:30 a.m.. This segment is free for children aged six and under, featuring races at distances of 50 yards, 100 yards, and 200 yards.
The festive atmosphere will be enhanced by a popular Christmas Costume Contest. Participants are encouraged to showcase their creativity, with awards going to the top three “best dressed” individuals. Moreover, prizes will be awarded to the top three finishers overall as well as in various age-group divisions for the 5K race.
Race records are held by notable athletes, including former Canadian runner Matthew Travaglini, who set the men’s record in 2019 with a remarkable time of 14 minutes and 40 seconds. The women’s record belongs to Bridget Pyke, a five-time champion, who completed the race in 17:27 during the same year.
This year’s event also emphasizes community support, with proceeds benefiting the People for Active Transportation Hawaii (PATH) and the Kiwanis Club of Kailua-Kona. Both organizations work on various youth programs and initiatives that positively impact the local community. Donations will be accepted during the event.
Digital creator and host of “Everything Hawaii,” Kawika Singson, expressed enthusiasm for the Jingle Bell Beach Run, stating, “In my opinion, the best, most fun 5K race on the island is the Jingle Bell Beach Run!” The season premiere of his show, “Adventures with Kawika,” is scheduled to air on December 21, 2023, at 7:30 p.m. on Spectrum OC16.
For those still looking to participate, online registration will close at 2:00 p.m. HST on December 19. Late registration, as well as bib number and timing chip pick-up, will occur on December 20 at the Coconut Grove Marketplace from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.. It is important to note that there will be no race day registration for the 5K.
