Oakland Man Sentenced to 22 Years for Homicide, Crime Spree
UPDATE: An Oakland man, Zikih Nobles, has begun serving a 22-year prison sentence following his involvement in a tragic 2017 homicide and a violent crime spree. Nobles, now 24 years old, reported to North Kern State Prison on November 6, 2023, almost exactly six years after he fatally shot 18-year-old Soane Mausia during a series of violent incidents.
Court records reveal that Nobles accepted this sentence as part of a plea deal with Alameda County prosecutors, pleading no contest to manslaughter related to Mausia’s killing and an unrelated robbery. He receives credit for eight years already served in custody.
Nobles was originally charged in 2021 for multiple offenses, including murder and attempted murder, stemming from a crime spree that began when he was just 16. His case has been a legal rollercoaster, oscillating between juvenile and adult court systems. In a significant ruling from 2023, a judge initially deemed him fit to be tried as a juvenile. However, prosecutors successfully argued for his adult charges to proceed.
Nobles is alleged to be a member of the Case gang, a notorious Oakland group linked to numerous violent acts over the decades. Officials noted that Nobles had lived an adult life for years, shaped by a traumatic childhood marked by parental incarceration and violence.
The crime spree began on November 5, 2017, when Nobles attempted to rob a woman, leading to an accidental shooting, which was followed by the fatal incident involving Mausia. Nobles shot Mausia at a residence located at the intersection of Lockwood Street and 78th Avenue. Mausia, a recent graduate of Skyline High School with a 4.0 GPA, was described as compassionate and supportive, with a fundraiser noting his ability to comfort those in need.
Nobles later admitted to police his role in the murder and other violent acts, including firing at a residence of suspected gang rivals. The crime spree culminated in a dramatic police chase through Oakland, where Nobles was arrested after crashing a stolen 2002 Mercedes Benz.
As the community reflects on the tragic loss of a promising young life, the case highlights the ongoing issues of gang violence and youth crime in Oakland. Nobles’ sentencing serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of such actions.
Authorities are keeping a close watch on gang activity in the area, as the ripple effects of this case continue to be felt. Community members are urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities.
This urgent update underscores the importance of addressing youth violence and the impact it has on families and communities. As the story develops, the focus remains on how similar incidents can be prevented in the future.
