Sterling Heights Launches Urgent Food Drive Amid SNAP Cuts
UPDATE: Sterling Heights kicks off its 47th Annual Ken Stempowski Memorial Food Drive amid urgent federal shutdown challenges and cuts to SNAP benefits. This year’s drive is more critical than ever, as local residents and businesses unite to combat rising food insecurity.
Following the announcement from the City of Sterling Heights, the Department of Public Works is spearheading this vital initiative, named after Ken Stempowski, who launched it nearly five decades ago. The food drive, which aims to support those affected by current economic constraints, is now collaborating with the Chaldean Community Foundation to expand its reach and impact.
“Ken’s legacy reminds us that one person’s compassion can create lasting change,” stated Mike Moore, DPW Director, emphasizing the importance of community solidarity during trying times.
Donation bins will be available at key locations throughout Sterling Heights, including City Hall, the Community Center, and the Sterling Heights Public Library. Residents can contribute nonperishable food items until December 17, with a special collection also planned during Sterling Heights’ annual event, Sterling Christmas, in early December.
Mayor Michael C. Taylor noted the significance of this partnership, stating, “Reaching out to all residents affected during this time is our priority.” This collaboration is essential as many families struggle with food access due to the current economic landscape.
Beyond food donations, monetary contributions are also encouraged. All proceeds will support the Community Food Bank of Macomb County, which serves a network of local food pantries and meal services. This financial assistance is crucial in ensuring that help reaches those most in need.
Residents are urged to act quickly and contribute, as every donation counts in this pressing situation. With the ongoing federal shutdown and SNAP cuts, the community’s support is vital to ensure that no one goes hungry this holiday season.
For more information on how to donate or volunteer, visit the City of Sterling Heights’ official website. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of our neighbors during this critical time.
