Suspected Brown University Shooter Linked to MIT Professor Murder
UPDATE: A shocking turn in the investigation into the mass shooting at Brown University reveals that the suspect, Claudio Manuel Neves-Valente, is also believed to have murdered an MIT professor. Federal authorities have confirmed that Neves-Valente, a 48-year-old Portuguese national, was found dead in a storage unit in Salem, New Hampshire, on Thursday.
During a press conference on Thursday night, Leah Foley, the United States Attorney for the District of Massachusetts, disclosed that Neves-Valente was the primary suspect in the shooting that left two Brown University students dead. The tragic incident occurred earlier this week, sparking a multi-day manhunt.
According to Foley, “This evening at approximately 9 p.m., federal agents breached a storage locker in Salem, New Hampshire, in search of Claudio Neves-Valente, a Portuguese national we believed shot and killed two Brown University students and an MIT professor in Brookline, Massachusetts.”
Neves-Valente is suspected of killing Nuno Loureiro, a professor at MIT’s Plasma Science and Fusion Center, who was shot at his home in Brookline on October 23, 2023. Loureiro succumbed to his injuries the following day. This adds to the urgency of the investigation, as the details of both murders continue to unfold.
The victims of the Brown University shooting were identified as Ella Brown, a 19-year-old student from Alabama and vice-president of the College Republicans at the university, and Mukhammad Aziz Umurzokov, an aspiring doctor. Both were tragically killed in this violent act, which has sent shockwaves through the academic community.
The manhunt for Neves-Valente intensified after the FBI released a person of interest before confirming Neves-Valente’s involvement. This unsettling news has raised questions about campus safety and the need for urgent discussions surrounding gun control.
As details emerge, the community is left to grapple with the devastating impact of these events. The connection between Neves-Valente and both victims highlights a grim reality, with reports indicating that he and Loureiro attended the same Portuguese university.
Authorities are now focused on determining the full extent of Neves-Valente’s actions and any potential motives behind these horrific crimes. As investigations continue, those affected are urged to seek support as they cope with the aftermath of this violence.
This ongoing situation is developing rapidly, and further updates are expected to be released in the coming hours. Stay tuned for the latest information as authorities work to piece together the events leading to these tragic losses.
